Bramley apples
Does anyone know where (if poss), you can buy them (Bramleys) from here in Auckland? If not is there somewhere you can buy the root stock?
Tried cooking with Breaburns, but it's not the same.
Also Coxs orange pippins?

Yeah I miss Bramleys too, haven't seen any down here in the SI. I love making apple pies and such like. Now I get my cooking apples from my sister's tree but no idea what type they are but they taste ok!!

Grow your own

BIG, mature Royal Gala or Braeburn are just as nice, but I don't know where you would buy them, they are either exported or juiced here. You might get them from orchard shops.
We've found large Fuji apples to be the nicest, but again, don't know where you would buy them.
We're able to get them as I do a seasonal stint at the local packhouse where you can bring home a few carrier bags full every week

Hey, you're a woman after my own heart. As you might guess it has been discussed here in the past but I couldn't find the thread I was thinking of. I have never seen Bramleys or any other specific cooking apples for sale in any shops in Auckland. Sometimes shops might put bags of large overgrown Granny Smiths in a bag and call them cooking apples.
However it is possible to purchase trees from some specialist growers like Koanga Institute and very occasionally see them for sale elsewhere

Re: Bramley apples
People tend to use Granny Smith's for cooking with here , which is what I have done. But they are not as good as Bramleys.
I ordered a Bramley apple sapling a couple of years back from Plant Barn, Silverdale. It is still quite small two years on but it has produced fruit, which I have removed for now as I want it too concentrate on growing for now! I should be able to let it fruit this year though.
Plant Barn, Silverdale have certainly started to stock Bramley apple trees now, so you could order from your nearest Plant Barn.
