Yep, have a pal running on a hob on bbq size gas bottle (tho tis piped outside like the big bottle arrangements) and she seems to go six months on one bottle! So easy to top up, too.

I think it's about $83 for a 9kg Swappa / Swap n Go from the Petrol station. You can also find them at Bunnings, Supercheaps and such like. Then it costs about $30 to $35 to exchange your empty for a new full one.

Sometimes you can find offers on Groupon / Groupy such as $25 for a Rockgas swap out / delivery.

We had two 45kg cylinders in Chch. They ran one gas fire and the hob.
In summer when we only used the hob (at least once a day) a cylinder would last 8months. In winter with the fire on most nights, a cylinder would last 4-5 weeks. We used 4-5 a year

We didn't have an automatic changeover, we weren't that posh! We had to go outside and change the regulator over manually

Did the gas fire vent and breathe through a chimney liner or straight wall feed ?

I don't know, I'm not that technical! There was a pipe out the back going up through a chimney. Would that be a chimney liner then?
