Bottled gas?
Okay this might be a silly question, but could we switch from mains to bottled gas to avoid the standing charges?
Is it possible?
Is it a viable thing to do?
What are the costs for bottled gas?
Is installation expensive?
At the moment we spend about $800 a year on gas, over half of which is standing charges.
We're about to get rid of our gas fire for a wood burner, leaving the hot water heater as our only gas appliance.
One day in the future we want a gas hob as well but that's a couple of years away at least.

Hi
I have absolutely no idea about the costs involved, however, the grumpy old man 2 houses up from us in Redwood (a former plumber who spends his days yelling at everyone younger than him, ie 98% of the population) has decided to do exactly that for the reasons you have given. He is also a mean ol' b*stard according to his wife so I can't imagine him wanting to spend money on anything without knowing if it is more dollar-efficient. The only concern was whether they plan to sell their house (so presumably the cost involved to change it over?).
Here is some information, though i have no idea about the company (i think an offshoot to Vector):

So in short:
yes, it is possible
Apparently it is viable
No idea about the rest.

Re: Bottled gas?
I'd happily recommend bottled gas.
There's no standing charge as such, but we pay around $100/year in "rental" on the two bottles. After that it's pay as you go.
Prices for LPG have gone up quite steeply in the past 4 or so months and the big (about 5 ft tall) bottles are now just over $100 - they were $70+GST when we moved in 18 months ago. That's with OnGas, don't know about any other suppliers.
How expensive....well we use gas for cooking, have Rinnai instant water heating (no hot water tank) and two fairly chunky Rinnai gas convector heaters and we're not too keen on being cold, but on the plus side the house is both double glazed and well insulated. Over summer one tank lasted nearly five months , but now winter has come we've just swapped one after 18 days - but that's with the gas heating running on timers and thermostats, on for an hour or so in the morning and quite a few hours in the evening.
If you're only using it for water heating I'd be surprised if you'd use more than 3 bottles/year!!
