Bored

I'm in Cambridge and the lack of things to do at night is getting very boring.
went out new years eve and there were 2 other people in the bar at 8.45pm.
went out tonight and the whole town it dead.
I know some are on holiday but its like this most weekends. I like living here
but the people are sooooo freekin boring.
going round to someones place for drinks is ok but you NEVER meet anyone new,
its such a controlled way of socialising.
Even on a good night most people over 30 are on their way home at 7.30pm
and the bars are dead until the kids come out to play at 11.00.
Aaaarrrggghhhh !!!!!!

Re: Bored

no much different here in Welly. there are more ppl doesn't mean you gonna meet someone interested.

its the reality of living in nz. What do you expect. I've given up socializing.

my life is no much different than yours. but I'd be even more depressed if I live in such a small town like where you live. I meet no one here, however I enjoy walking around town alone when ppl aren't around like this evening. I went out for tea tonight but still loads of restaurant shut. so end up going to NW and bought some ready made soup then went home and have tea and now its time to go to bed. Circle of my life is just plain boring. I am going back to varsity this year study full time/work part time, hope this makes me less bored.

The people must be going somewhere. Either hook up with other Brits or find out where the friendly Maoris go. Another option is to look up News Years parties online, pay your money and go to some kind of function.

That's the reason my brother-in-law went back to live in the UK.
He lived in Rotorua and the only people in the pubs were the ones playing pokies.

We went up there to see him and one Friday night we went into an Indian restaurant at 7:30pom on a Friday to be told they were closing because they'd had enough customers and had run out of food!!

When we were first here, I stopped in Cambridge for lunch en route to Rotorua. It was about 3PM on a Saturday (admittedly in June) and the whole place was deserted - I mean freaky! It was like they'd just had the 4 minute warning. It really freaked me out.

Then we got to Rotorua and were the only people on the street or in the restaurant!

Which is why I live in Auckland!:)

That happens here mate too.
We had a hell of a night last night but it wasn't summat you would have wanted to be in on. It was just yoof getting smashed from 10 pm onward.

I do see what you mean in your post though. Most all of our interactions happen at people's homes. BBQ's. Dwinks and all that. Lovely people and we enjoy that but we could do with a few good evenings out and/or a knees up . It just doesn't happen here.

So what made you move to Cambridge out of interest? Have you considered moving to the bright lights of Auckland?

(BTW - the deli on the main street in Cambridge serves great food!!)

The bars in the Octagon in Dunedin always seemed to be pumping through the evenings and nights when I used to go there on the razz with colleagues and their mates (Friday/Saturdays) - maybe you should consider moving down to 'the deep south' :)

Re: Bored

Well I'm not surprised Cambridge was empty New Years eve - everyone was at the open-air concert in Rotorua :p (Which, incidentally, was really good, with a world class fireworks display at midnight.)

In Welly, I've not been out a lot what with being unemployed and all, but I've been out two or three times in the evening since I got here. Maybe I was lucky, but I had a good Oktoberfest night and the night we met up with the other BE-ers wasn't too bad either.

I suppose I can probably understand where you're coming from though. There are only two pubs (sorry sports bars) near us and one of those seems to shut at 10. The other is either busy or dead - no predicting one way or the other. I'd rather have that though than the drunk teenagers that used to regularly wake me up in the early in the morning on their way home back in Manchester. Guess I'm getting old, I'd rather have a good nights sleep than a night on the town nowadays...

I had a really good social life when I lived in Wellington. Most of it was from visiting peoples houses and networking that way. It does seem that most Kiwi's prefer to visit mates at home than go home. Might be because alcohol from the off license is cheaper than the pub?

You have to really put your self out there in NZ. I'm in Melbourne at the moment and we don't have many Australian friends. Most of our friends are Kiwi's, English, Canadian and one person from Taiwan. After meeting most Australians I have no urge to see them socially.
