When we visited NZ it was in October and we simply booked our flights and the first night in a motel and then planned a route and took each day as it came.

We didn't find any problems with places to stay, you can chose to go as basic or upmarket as you wish and as you're just out of season, you may even be able to negotiate your nightly rates, don't be afraid to ask!

It is wonderful to travel like this, the freedom to stay as long or short a period of time as you want is exactly what you need on a reccie, so you can get a good feel for the places you like the look of and not waste time on those you don't!

Good luck with your plans!

We went for 3 weeks in April, we booked the first & third week's accommodation because we know we wanted to stay in Papamoa in the Bay of Plenty (which is where we want to live!)

The second week, however, we just arranged to pick up a campervan at Queenstown airport (in the south island) & had no itinerary at all!

With 2 kids in tow...age 5 & 10 we had a great time! We just called in at Top Ten holiday camps & spent our nights there!

If I were to do it all again, I wouldn't change a thing....just book the campervan & the sky's the limit!!

Whatever you decide...ENJOY!!!

Thanks everyone for all your advice. It's been very much appreciated!! We've decided to just 'go with the flow' as it seems that everything will be fine. We're off next week so will give you an update when we get back. Can't believe it's all happening so fast now. Thanks again, TTFN Lou x

Hi guys - just thought I'd let you know they're repeating the last series of Wanted Down Under on BBC2 this week at 5.15pm. Ta, Lou x
