Oh NZ,

It certainly has its good points but stuff like this makes me wonder if I really want to be here.

I mean this is the wife of a guy who bought a particular skill to this country, a skill that it desperately needs and the nzis act like this....???

NZIS is composed of bureaucrats that are processing the paperwork as they are told. Your beef would be with the Ministry of Immigration and Department of Labour as they set the rules.

What interests me is that they have absolutely no way to "police" people that lose the weight to get in and then put it back on once they are here its a stupid rule i reckon and very degrading to people.

Oh just one more thing i was 70kg when i came to NZ 31yrs ago and have managed to "diet" my way to being way over that so does that mean i now have to be sent back to the UK because im a strain on the system as well as my pants??
I have stopped smoking though does that give me extra points?

Now that would make a great BBC episode of downunder not sure what it could be called though.......Maybe "having your cake and eating it as well"
On that happy note i think i had better take (roll) myself off for a walk.....
Have a fab day
Cheers

OK, if your going to be pedantic: Ministry of Immigration/Dept of Labour & NZIS all one of the same.

And I'm not annoyed ( I assume thats what your getting at when you say "Your beef") at all, just becoming quite despondent.

Er.................... I did't think having a raised BMI was a reason for not getting a visa. I was under the belief that if you BMI was greater than 35 then you were required to have a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT). I know several over weight individuals who have got PR who are classed as "obese".
I think there is something mising from this story.

You know my BMI was ok when we arrived and is likely still ok, however, my physique is not quite the same as it was 16 months ago.

Just because I am not too heavy at the moment doesn't mean I am not going to go crazy and eat all those enormous Cadbury bars that are everywhere and become absolutely blubberous and develope type 2 Diabetes, bad breath and start mowing the lawn with my shirt off.

It is important to have a criteria, but for Pete's sake, the NZ immigration service needs the flexibility to allow our more flubbery friends in if needed. After all, they may make enough money to pay for the insurance to take care of themselves.

I personally don't have a problem with them restricting entry to those who are grossly overweight and obese but then I'm reasonably fit and in the ideal weight to height range with a low BMI........

The BMI score is not the always a accurate indicator on how 'fat' someone is as many ultra fit but muscle heavy athletes can have a high BMI but this is something that 'fat' people seem to cling to and use as a reason to dismiss the fact their own BMI is high when actually....... they're just very fat.

What doe's seem a little weird is that while actively combating the fat people entering the country they are doing little to combat 'fatness' at home in NZ.

This country seems to have a huge problem with grossly overweight people within in its current population especially, but not exclusively, Maori and Pacific island peoples. The latter is a problem recognised by many of the District Health Boards even if many in the communities concerned refuse to accept it as a problem.

Are we being 'fattist' as someone put it a while back by mentioning such an issue...... yep absolutely, but then those people involved (in nearly every case) ate themselves into the situation so its their problem to sort out if they really want to.

The answer is relatively simple really.. don't eat so much, don't eat rubbish foods all day and keep fit..... low and behold entry to a country you wish to live in is not barred by your excessive weight.

ITA with NiseysOH. What people need to remember is that being allowed - yes, I said allowed - to emigrate to another country is an earned privilege, NOT a right! And if there are some things that people need to work on (that can be worked on) to be accepted by the authorities that make the decisions, then so be it, work on them. But don't sit around whining about how an entire country is against you. Empower yourself. Get off the sofa and get that weight off.

</rant>

Oh, and that was NOT directed at anyone on this thread or forum, but was a commentary on the blog.

I dont think either of them is sitting around and whining about it.

On the the contrary, to become a deep water cable specialist for the Royal Navy, of which there are only a few in the world would require a lot of hard work, both physical and mental.

The point here is the attitude of nz and its failure to move forward with the rest of the first world...

I'm calling BS on that. I emigrated to the US and had to go through tests that are just as stringent, and they don't even have public healthcare to speak of!

Some quotes from the blog post. And yes I do realise that these are from the bloggers, not the people the article was about.

"Mrs. G. wonders if they are also weeding out the smokers, the drinkers, the depressed..."

Then Mrs. G. hasn't read the medical requirements very well.

"Give us your poor, your tired, your (huddled) skinny (masses) asses longing to be free..."

Uh... wrong country.

"Mrs. G. can't help thinking that being rejected by an entire country, forced to separate from her husband and having the size of her ass discussed in six thousand languages might not be the kind of diet support Rowan needs right now."

Paranoia is rife, though, I see!

<cynicism>The NZIS is an evil organisation, of course, discriminating against those in awful health, not letting in those who are HIV+ or who've had TB. How awful!</cynicism>
