Son got a $80 fine today for doing 101kmh in a 100kmh zone. No tolerance at all. A nice little earner for someone though.

Damn that's just wrong. What about the tolerance in the speed gun, atmospheric conditions, other traffic etc ? There's just no room for error. There's no way any speed gun can guarantee such an exact figure. Very harsh!!!

I can honestly say that every journey made I have passed a speed camera van, even on minor roads. It is crazy especially coming from the UK where you can now drive from Devon to London and not see a police car. I now drive below the limit and have my sat nav on all the time with the speed signal set at the exact speed limit, then it beeps if I go over.
I would challenge that one with the reasons escapedtonz has stated. Ask for calibration proof, ask anything, you never know it may help get it dropped
But as you say very very harsh :(:(

@ snaps. Defo one to contest in court. The tolerance of a speed gun is normally 3-4% and that is when it has been calibrated, however that said the officer or muftie van could have clocked your son at say 105 kph and has already knocked the "error" off the reading to get to the 101 kph ?
ALL odometers...and I mean ALL odometers in cars, on bikes, trucks etc read low. It is a manufacturers tolerance that is always built in. Some read lower than others but as a general rule probably 3% lower, so anyone going bang on 100kph will actually be travelling maybe 97 kph. The only ones that differ to this are people or the cops who have had their speedo properly calibrated so it reads exact and just running lower tyre pressures or high tyre wear will throw it out slightly.
Getting an odometer to read accurately is a fine art.

Possibly he did not give you the whole story - fine for 1 to 10 k over the limit is $30.

Was he doing 101 with a trailer so he should have been doing 90? That fine would have been 80.

You would possibly not see a police car between London and Devon checking speed because :-
1) Big cut backs in policing means they no longer have that kind of manpower.
2) Because of these babies........BBC News - Speeding fines in England and Wales hit four-year high.
Incidentally sat nav speed indications are only accurate on level ground! not exact.;)

If it was $80 for doing 101kmh then your son should take it to a tribunal or something

The most NZ police fine for going up to 10kmh over the speed limit is $30. Its on the NZ police website.

Son is presently on the SI touring in a Sirion so have had no further update. When I find out the 'facts' I'll post them on here. I believe he was caught near Wellington on his way to catch the ferry.

Argh ! What are you like. You know there have been cut backs here . We had so few traffic police and yet we now have less, not more. I'm surprised we have anyone left in this area to clock speed or be properly vigilant for drink driving. Too busy with other police work .

One way to avoid a speed fine. Don't take it to the edge. No need on these roads anyway.

I don't I stay legal and don't complain about the police doing their job.
The point of my post is in NZ police look after speeders. in the UK the job was handed to local authorities who use hundreds of cameras and if they make the box visible they keep the money. I think I prefer the NZ way.;)

On Monday at 21.40 driving home from the local cinema; here in Rotorua; there was a ghost van parked on the side of the road hidden under a tree in the shadows. Thankfully I was well under the 50 km/h limit, but I'm sure there will be a few receiving a late surprise Christmas card and demand

Incidentally, the film was 'What we did on our holidays'.
