This might open up a bit of healthy debate! Ha ha!!

When we get to NZ we really want to be somwhere where we can...

enjoy as much warm weather as possible
swim in the ocean for as much of the year as possible
sail
snorkel / scuber dive

can anyone give any suggestions?

We're thinking nelson area at the moment... but what is gisbourne like? never got the chance to go when we visited earlier this year and have a feeling it will appeal...

we're also 29 and 32 so a relatively lively town nearby would be nice!! yes, basically we're looking for something near perfect! ha ha!!

love to hear your thoughts!!

Marlborough Sounds/ Bay of Islands both sound like places you'd enjoy. The shelter from the swell's will mean you can sail more within the confines of the geography for more of the time than elsewhere. If it's warmth, then the N. Island is definately a priority as the sea there is a steady 3 to 5 degrees warmer than down here in the S Island, and that 5 degrees can mean the diff between swimming and being an ice cube. Visibility will be the biggest factor for snorkelling/ scuba, but again it sounds like the N Island will be more up your street for that too, especially the East coast. So, Coromandel could also work for you. Look down the East coast of the N Island and see where stands out for you.

Enjoy!

Roughly speaking the further North the warmer. So I'd think the Bay Of Islands - but it might be a bit too quiet for you? I know Pixi-Dust snorkels, fishes, surfs etc, etc and lives up there. You may like to have a look at her blog ...http://ourweefarm.blogspot.com/

We have a bit of everything you're looking for here in the Bay of Plenty with Tauranga being a thriving town but having the ladiback beach lifestyle - especially the Mount and Papamoa. Plus the weather's pretty good! It is expensive though.

We have everything you're looking for in Orewa (as does any good beach suburb of Auckland). And if you want lively, Auckland is within 30 min drive off peak (there is even a late bus to/from CBD but it takes an hour - good if you want to have a few beers).
I also love the Marlborough Sounds, but the weather is colder down there and jobs are more limited.
The East Coast of the NI is quite exposed - good for surf, but if it is rough, your options for boating, diving etc will be more limited. The beauty of Auckland is that the Hauraki Gulf is very sheltered by the Barrier Islands and Coromandel, so very rarely too rough to go boating here
Bay of Islands also very beautiful but again, probably harder to find work

Yes, I'd pick north of Auckland for all year water access. There's good snorkelling up further at Goat Island I believe. Nelson is one of the sunniest places and great for sailing, but I don't know what the water temperature is like for snorkelling, apart from in summer.
For all year round water sport you might have to look at Australia.

I'd guess the best places aren't ideal for general work possibilities. I find the Coromandel's pennisular is ideal for sea kayaking, not yet braved the middle winter month's but if I invest in wet suit will do next winter.
