Beds

I am having a lovely time on my shopping spree ready for shipping in the new year. Was looking at buying a new bed but have noticed that the matress sizing is different in the UK to NZ ie King size UK is measured as: 5ft x 6ft 6" whilst the NZ king size comes in at: 5ft 6" x 6ft 8". Therefore its going to be difficult to buy NZ linens for a UK sized bed, so will have to bring several sets with.

Anybody else noticed this difference in sizes?

Only when we got here and our king size stuff wouldn't quite fit NZ queen size beds! Go figure...

yes just posted that on another thread actually...

we brought our bed linnen with us...but it doesn't fit nz beds.....sheets are to small, and quilt covers in uk are to small...

we had to buy new when we got here...having said that, you can get some bargains when sales are on,especially briscoes....

you can pick up cheapish bed linnen in the wearhouse to if you rake hard....we picked up queen size bed covers for about $25 and you can get a nice pack of sheets(fitted, flat and 2 pillo cases in pack for about $39

are you buying beds in uk or waiting till you come over...jacky

My trusty sewing machine will be a godsend.
UK King size flat sheets can be turned into NZ King sized fitted with a bit of elastic and darting.
No way I'm throwing out the percale!

Re: Beds

Oddly we have a double bed but a king size duvet (from UK). We were told when we got here that a UK King size is the equivalent of a NZ Queen size. So I went out and duly bought a new NZ Queen sized duvet cover. Only its way too small. I took it back and got a NZ King sized duvet cover that fits my UK King sized duvet perfectly. Go figure!

The other thing is a super sized single. Most UK single beds are 3 foot wide. But some NZ single mattresses are super singles so UK single fitted bottom sheets won't fit!

When we got here we bought a double mattress to make do with until our container came. It is now in the spare room on a slat bed by husband made. All the UK double fitted bottom sheets fit the NZ double mattress no problem.

A lot of mattresses here seem to have mattress toppers and you can buy extra deep fitted bottom sheets for these from places like Farmers and Briscoes (both stores seem to have permanent sales on).

Hope this helps.
