Avoiding being accidentally woken by messages from your UK friends
If you've an android phone and don't want to switch it off at night I recommend an app called Sleep Peacefully which turns sound and vibes off on your phone during the night. If anybody tries to get hold of you it advises them you're asleep but they can remotely deactivate the app by texting you the word URGENT, and then phone you again. It's a brilliant way to stop apps like FB and Instagram alerting you to UK friends' cat pictures at 2am, without having to turn notifications off.
(I'm nothing to do with the app btw, just find it useful)

Most phones should have a do not disturb function. I use it every night although I don't exactly have many notification that are switched on, just the standard ones like calls and texts. Shouldn't need an app to do it

Android:Setting>Sound>Do not disturb>Automatic Rules
Set it up for days and times you want quiet.

And if you don't want to disturb other family members , buy a smart watch like a pebble. These also allow you to have quiet time when only phone calls can get through
