Auckland has been rated one of the world's top 10 cities to visit by travel bible Lonely Planet.

Well, well. I reckon one or two posters might have a thing or two to say about that.

But apart from that, it is a good place to visit as a tourist I think, beautiful location with the harbour and islands, excellent food, good parks and unique volcanoes spread around the city, some good wineries in Kumeu/Waiheke, enough interesting things like museums and art gallery. If you were flying to NZ for a holiday then it's worth spending a few days in Auckland rather than just flying straight to the South Island.

Reading the Herald piece I noted that LP rate the shopping in AKL highly????
Clearly they have made that one up. Wellington is so much better for shopping than Auckland, even if you consider all the "centres" in the City as one place, when they are a good bus ride apart.
I agree with SR, the NZ media have chosen to over-blow a positive story about NZ. Nothing unusual there.........

So I can expect to see Hamilton make the list soon, then?

I struggle to enjoy Auckland because I just hate traffic hassles, but I remain convinced there's a beautiful city there I'm missing out on- it's just once one makes it to Manukau, one is just as well to get on a plane and go to a much better city somewhere else, no?

Ha ha - that's because Auckland's new nickname is SIn Ciy after the major Len Brown saga - tee hee, he is the perfect major to run this place, heaps to do if you like casinos, and brothels and have lots of dirty cash.
