Auckland or Algarve

I have NZ and GB passports but have never really lived in NZ. I am trying to choose between two very different places as in the title. Any informed opinion from anyone who has been to both (apart from NZ is more isolated) ? I believe Portugal treatment of expats has got a bit greedy as they attempt to raise money but the question is more about lifestyle for retirees. Tks
