Default Asbestos in homes

Just a heads up we've got a stippled effect ceiling and it has asbestos in it

Apparently it's really common even with recent houses, and the old circuit boards are asbestos as well

You need to get it checked out if it's damaged or you're going to do some DIY on it

Get a specialist to come out and they do a scape test and confirm it, costs about $200

Better to be safe than sorry, we found out 3 years after the quakes

Couldn't find you an older property in any country that does not contain cement type asbestos material. Corrugated garage and shed roofs to floor Marley tiles.
The product is quite harmless as long as it is left alone, not disturbed and just encapsulated....ie. simply painted.

Thanks for the reply

Knew about the sheds and roof but not about the stippled ceilings inside houses.

Didn't want anyone drilling or cutting it

Cheers

Friends of ours discovered the same thing a few years after buying a villa. Don't know all the details but do know they had to fork out alot of money to get their roof sorted. Handy to know and probably worth the $200 to check it out before buying an older property.

Stippled is the wrong terminology the effect being referred to is what the trade used to call Artex. It was a ceiling paint that had "lumps" of asbestos in it. Very useful for hiding cracks as it was slightly elastic. A lot of peeps used to fix more GIB on top of it to encapsulate...safer than removing it as long as everyone knows it is there.

Wouldn't want to live with asbestos in the house. It is truly nasty stuff. Once it is airborne it can start its dangerous work. It causes a lot of diseases some of which are deadly such as mesothelioma.
