arrival accommodation logistics... what did you do?
Hello!
I'm new here
I am a few weeks into planning my family's emigration and we are hoping to be out in around 4 months, visa process permitting. Just in time for winter! woo!! lol...
Anyway, I wanted to ask what others have done for your arrival in terms of accommodation.
We plan to rent for some time before committing to buying, but won't be able to look for a rental until we have arrived, and won't want to move in until our container arrives with our stuff. I'm sure this is a challenge for most.
So, for around 8-12 weeks I'll need somewhere to stay. I was thinking about trying to long term book a bach or air bnb (I have a 1 yo and a 3 yo) and have started to take a look but can I ask for those of you already out in NZ or those with more advanced plans than me what did you do/what are you planning on doing?
Thanks

Hi Leighanne and welcome to BE,
where abouts are you thinking of heading to or is that dependant on a job offer?
we had a hotel booked by MIL for the first few days as a present and then we rented. Rental was organised before myself and the kids came over and a friend in the area got us a few things, like cutlery, table and chairs and we bought camping chairs to sit on in the living room. We organised mattresses to be delivered on the day we moved in and also hired a washing machine. Bought a normal sized fridge freezer and that was about that until the container arrived. Do not underestimate the length of time those weeks are until the container comes. thinking 6 weeks of "camping in house" is NOT fun.
If I had known that the Salvation Army Stores loans out household items and furniture I would of been down there like a shot. so worth noting that and they deliver and collect the items once you have finished with them.

Hi!
Thanks, that's really useful to know about sal army!
I guess that's why I was thinking about a holiday rental as they often even have things like high hairs and cots... as well as cutlery etc - just need to find someone who might negotiate on price or it could be crazy expensive.
My husbands job is in auckland cbd but we hope to buy somewhere between puhoi and warkworth. For rental we will look around orewa/Stillwater/redbeach
How does the rental market work - are there agents just like in the U.K.?
It feels like it's all so much trickier having such young kids!

We did a holiday rental for 2 weeks booked before we arrived, moved into a normal rental after extending the holiday rental for a week. Bought airbeds to sleep on and a minimal set of future outdoor plastic crockery and cutlery and yes camped for the 6 further weeks until our first container turned up.
Not fun but not the worst either, this was in August so relatively easy to extend a holiday rental at that time of year.
Mr Rental can provide furniture/washing machine etc which you will want with children.
Yes most Real Estate agents have rental property departments.
"Between Puhoi and Warkworth" is a heck of a daily commute, I wouldn't do it. SH1 has several bottlenecks as you get closer to the CBD. If I had to do it I would drive to the Albany park n ride and take the bus from there - they bypass most of the bottlenecks on dedicated/seperate lanes giving quicker and more consistent travel times than you would ever get by car.

I met someone who stayed here on arrival:Fernhill Cottages - Fernhill Cottages - Short Term Accommodation in Albany, Auckland - Family and pet friendly
I suspect it might be pricey but they look like they are set up for migrants - might be worth splashing out to ease yourself in.

Thanks Simonsi - will check out the mr rental stuff!!
I know warkworth would be far.. but we love it up there and want a lot of green around us. Having said that, one of the reasons we will rent a bit closer is tonwait and see and be very sure before we commit to buying. BUt, husband commutes 3 hours Great Malvern to London currently so this will be a doddle.
Only time will tell!
