What is the average over there? Curious minds want to know.

Here's it's around 65K Canadian which would be a bit more in NZD

Salaries in NZ are not v good. C $14 an hour unskilled. C $27.50 per hour for someone with a degree. That makes the bottom in the low $30k range and the higher range C $57k.

I got a part time job about 4 years ago and it had a pro rata f/t scale of $48k p/a. That was apparently considered 'big money'!!

My understanding is that the average salary now is somewhere around $45k ish p/a.

Howick,

not entirely sure where you have got that number from, kiwilass. That's an absurdly optimistic 'average salary', figure you quote. As someone who has lived the last 15 years in Canada, I found your figure inflated, so I've done some searching & I would happily be corrected by you, if you can find better data, but CAD$65k works out to be (37.5 hour week) $33/hr! Your figure is nearly $10/hr over this figure!

The average hourly wage in Canada for 2011- for full time employees, is CAD$24.81, according to:
http://www.livingin-canada.com/work-...es-canada.html

If not exact, it's certainly, in my experience, indicative. If you were talking about average household income, I would think that $65k is not that far off the mark.

It might have been BC, or maybe Vancouver, I can't remember honestly.

Whatever the salary diff, the standard of living here is higher I've found.

FYI, that website you picked? How reliable is that? It doesn't seem to be a government one. Just curious. the NZ data is interesting but I guess a better question is what salary do most of the population live on? Same for Canada too. Seems to hard to answer that one.

Well, kiwilass, in the absence of any data to refute the figures I have for Canada, I'd suggest around $CAD25/hr is fairly accurate. Of course, like any country, there are variances- if you are working in downtown T.O, then the average salary is oviously significantly more than somewhere in Nova Scotia- as is the case in NZ.

This document...

http://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/docserv...46C62AB575A784

.........while a little dated, puts across numbers which are right- in my experience- Canada, salaries about 15% less between NZ & Canada, howvever, my take home, as a %, is vastly more in NZ, than Canada. My total tax in Canada, amounted to 41% of my gross, each month, in NZ, it amounts to 28% (not including kiwisaver), or 30% (with kiwisaver). The trade off, though, was that for more taxes, we got $7/day daycare & free healthcare. In NZ, dentists, for example, are extortionate & I would suggest that people should have private health insurance, which in my case amounts to $150/month for excellent coverage.

In summary, Canada taxes far, far more on PAYE, however, you 'pay as you go' more in NZ. When you get to COL, there are so many variables at play & it varies person to person. One example- in Canada, fruit/veges on average were cheaper, but the quality was diabolical, compared to NZ produce.

We (being me, him and 3 kids) have been here for 4 years now, have made quite a lot of friends and have made the effort to go out and meet people.

I have a love-hate relationship with New Zealand. This week I love it, maybe next week something will happen that will really pi$$ me off and I'll hate it again. Stuff happens

You can't base your life decisions on what people say on a public forum, someone is always going to come along and try to stomp on your dreams - it's just something some bored people do to pass time

We came out after selling up the house, shipped our stuff and had never set foot in the place. Do we have any regrets? Hell yes... that we didn't do it sooner!

NZ is an expensive place to live, the houses are over-priced and not maintained, the people can be rude and arrogant... does this sound anything like the UK by any chance??

Give it a go! You only live once

I am not sure anyone at the moment posting on here would ever stomp on anyone's dreams, or am I being really niave? Some people can be quite negative (me) about NZ and some really positive (me). I give it like I think it is. There have been some REALLY bitter turnips in the past on here but for now I reckon everyone is just telling it how they see it.

I was just talking in general Genesis, not just about here on the forum I didn't make it that plain though, sorry! Depending on how my day has gone I can go full force on hating NZ (not here, usually to my hubby or my poor Mum), and then flipping it and haven't nothing negative said about the place. It's horses for courses

It's a nicer place now on here than it was a couple of years ago, and why I disappeared for a while. BUT, I like how it is now. Everyone tells it like it is without stepping on anyone's toes (much) and the nastiness has stayed away.

Life is what you make it people! We all have a choice in life...

I have to say I'm quite shocked to hear this. Maybe I'm being a bit sensitive being a kiwi and all, but I've always found kiwis to very friendly. Mind you most Brits are friendly too I guess (particularly outside of London).

Sorry you have had a bad experience.

Ahh don't apologise. People can be rude and arrogant the world over I have plenty more friends that aren't rude and arrogant, and the rude ones don't stay friends for long I have a nack for saying it how it is and I don't give them much thought. I can walk away, they have to live with and listen to themselves

Why on earth do you feel this way? I am surprised that you can have your boat rocked so much by some negative threads. I don't think anything or anyone on one of these forums would/could have put me off moving here (had I known of them at that juncture) when I was going thru' the process. You could say the same about men, women, relationships, et al. Everyone has something to say about something. Some say it positive some negative. My feelings are that if you can be put off so easily in any of these areas maybe you were not so focussed in the 1st place?
