We don't own one here but we have found that people are incredibly generous when it comes to horses. We go up to Plimmerton, to friends that one of my colleagues introduced me to. We groom, poo-pick, feed etc and quite often ride their horses. They even let the girl ride one their horses in a local show - if you want to have a look, it's about 2 entries back in my blog. I have been incredibly impressed with their generosity and trust

We found riding lessons to be pretty expensive. $32 for an hour - and that was a group lesson in Hamilton. Even more expensive down here by Wellington - up to $55 for a hour's group lesson. That's why I started looking for alternatives. When you consider you may be earning $20 - $25 per hour, it works out at rather more than I was prepared to pay.
SarahB has her own horse - she may be able to give you a better idea of what it costs in this country
