Default Anyone in the GIS industry???

Hey,

Am hoping that there's someone who can advise on the health of the GIS (geographic information systems) industry in NZ.

I know that DOC use it a lot in regards to most of their conservation projects. But I can imagine that DOC, as with all other government divisions, is being severely hit by the current financial 'climate'. I'm not sure what other organisations/companies are significant employers in GIS.

Was wondering/hoping that anyone involved in this field can provide a little bit more information.

Cheers,
Manners

GNS aren't a company, they are a Crown Research Institute (CRI). They are run like a company but set up the govt, and the (only) Stakeholder is the Minister for Economic Development. They employ people with Masters/PhDs to do research, rather like a University but their staff don't have to teach. There is, understandably, a bit of tension between CRIs and Universities for this reason as they all compete for the same research funding.

I imagine that there would be GIS related jobs coming up: for example, the whole of Canterury needs re-mapping after the quake as Christchurch is now one meter nearer to Kaikoura

If you want to pm me a bit more about your skills, I might be able to give you some specific info. I work at a Uni and am on the Board of a CRI
