Any psychiatrists on the forums?
Hello all,
I am new to this website. My husband and I are seriously considering a move to NZ in the next 2-3 years. I am currently a doctor in training to become a psychiatrist and I was wondering if anybody on these forums works as a psychiatrist in NZ and can give me a bit of an insight into working conditions, what the major differences are between working in the UK and NZ etc etc.
Many thanks,
mochalova

Yeah same here.
Aren't all psychiatrists a bit mad?
If it's like most other medical jobs then you are likely to be in demand but payed less.
Hmmm I was going to say that the work might be less challenging than in more highly populated countries but then I realised that mental instablity is probably fairly evenly spread.
You probably know better than I do.

Thanks for the welcome
I will probably post a bit more about our situation and desire to move to NZ in the introduction forum at some point in the near future.
WP:
Hmmmm....Psychiatrists being a bit mad.... I suppose we are just comfortable being in the company of people who others find unsettling for one reason or another. That, plus certain films propagate the stereotype!
With regards to the work being more challenging in highly populated countries I think it entirely depends on the mental health resources available. It is true that generally speaking highly populated urban areas have higher rates of schizophrenia, depression and substance misuse, but if these areas have better mental health facilities- e.g. inpatient units, high staff : patient ratio, then the work can be less stressful. I suppose it will vary depending on whereabouts in NZ we decide to live.

I know lots of psychiatrist but that's no the same LOL
Most of ours at work are kiwis but we get the occasional pom.
Wouldn't know what they think though - would be an odd question for me to ask but I could try tomorrow
One of my good friends is a consultant child psych and is happy enough but very very very busy. Auckland may be very different to the provinces but tbh, a lot of docs balk at the ideas of the provinces and they struggle to attract good staff as the support can be pretty lacking.
I definitely would want to receive my health care in Auckland.
The DHB that I work for employs people I believe to help people settle in the country. You could try contacting one of the District Health Boards and see if they can put you in touch with someone for a chat
