Any ideas?
We've arrived in Tauranga, staying in a motel (not great!). We've very mixed feelings/emotions. It's a shock to the system, to say the least - you're on a high then when you arrive it's like hitting a brick wall at full speed. We've hired a car, staying in a motel with just the basics, should be looking for a rental for when our stuff arrives but we're too mixed-up - its not good at all. Didnt think it would be like this. We're up the wall with our sleep pattern (its 4.45 in the morning and I'm on here! I should be sleeping!!!) and need something to tire us all out. We need ideas as to what to do this weekend, keep the boys occupied and wear us all out! We've not looked around the place yet - too tired and not in the right frame of mind - so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well Done for taking the plunge! Not having done it myself yet I cannot help with experience!
However try and remember what made you do this in the first place, whether its quality of life a fresh start etc When u dreamt about nz what were u doing and try and pre-occupy yourself with achieving your dream. Moving to the other side of the world with children and jet lag to boot is bound to feel daunting tiring and emotional. I hope you get some sleep soon and feel brighter and more settled xx ()

Welcome to post-landing shock, totally normal. Take the. Out to the Luge at Rotorua or dress right and head out for a long beach walk between the showers. If you want indoor drive out to Auckland, the Auckland Domain museum is indoor and free and has loads to see....

Aye, it's a big shock to the system but you're head will eventually come round. I started work 2 days after landing, it was too early but my god it got my sleeping patterns sorted out.
If I was you I'd buy a map of the north island and get out and about, the coastline is amazing and normally deserted. When you're all having a great time exploring these beautiful amazing places you'll realise what a great move you've made. It's all about keeping busy, don't sit around thinking about home.

Dress up warm, go to The Mount and have breakfast outside at one of the cafes, then have a good walk around the mount and up the beach.
Don't rush your emotions - and although the urgency will be present to find somewhere to live quickly - give yourself sometime to breathe and take in your surroundings and get over the jetlag...... "Things will become clearer when your head is in the right place and well rested!"....
Good luck.

Make sure you do get out, walks and waterfalls abound. Remember, if you allowed a motel room to become your world in the UK it would depress you too

Yup ! I agree. Get out to The Mount and take a good long walk. Kids don't quite feel the cold the same , so maybe they'll have fun digging away to make a hot pool in the sands.

What they've all said. I don't know the ages of your kids but if you can drag them UP the Mount as then you'll have some wonderful views. Any of the cafes on the beach side strip are good. My favourite's Sidetrack.
Have a wander round passed the hot pools (sadly closed) to Pilot Bay and then down the Mount main street. There's a cinema further along there, passed Burger King on the left.
In Tauranga there's indoor golf, rock wall climbing (Mount actually), ten pin bowling, more walks, Waimarino out passed Bethlehem for water activities, McClaren Falls Park.

Re: Any ideas?
I remember that feeling well from my first few days. You've been through a huge emotional roller coaster in taking the plunge to move out here, plus all those emotionally draining goodbyes, then that hellish flight. Now you're here, you know no-one, the motel is grotty, and it's mid-winter. Then, to add insult to everything else, your body clock has no idea whatsoever what time zone you're in and is keeping you awake at the oddest hours. (You'll be ready to go to bed again by 6pm you wait!).
There's no easy answer, but you're here now, and it will get better. Honest . For now, I'd say get out, get some fresh air, explore the beach, climb the Mount and start looking for some better accommodation. Now you're here you can inspect properties...even if it's just another motel or a bach for a couple of weeks before you take on a more permanent rental. A more comfortable base will lift your spirits.
If you follow an earlier suggestion about luging in Rotorua drop me a PM. I'm at home this weekend (well, Papamoa this afternoon/ evening), but Rotorua on Sunday....I'll meet anyone for a coffee & a chat up the luge. You could try zorbing too! Eeek!
I hope you start feeling heaps more positive very soon. Take care

Re: Any ideas?
Ditto what everyone said except for the zorbing perhaps
Jet lag, goodbyes, the move are surely all contributing to how you feel, hopefully you'll feel much better soon and enjoy your new life
Good luck!! Let us know how your trip to The Mount went and remember to post lots of pictures!

Jetlag is a terrible thing! - it will take some time to settle - but its been such a beautifully warm day today in Rotorua/ Tauranga! and it will definitely get better honest! Its a daunting experience at times - to uproot from the UK to New Zealand - but there is lots to see and stunning beautiful forests, beaches and loads to get out and do here!! Just relax a bit and if your in Rotorua plz pm me!
