Because you've never heard any other context you must make you right of course!! Just don't be rooting the next door neighbours daughter playing in the local netball team, or you'll find yourself in big trouble.

get your facts straight or wind your neck in.
In actual fact you root for a team, you don't root them.
Even our friends from the USA would spot that and they do more rootin' for teams/players/the good old USofA then any other people on the planet..
actually you can get rooted by a team - that expression has been used on the football field when we were getting stuffed or stuffing the oposition.
