Am not a fan of Christchurch.... but....
But...
Am trying hard to give it a real go... Am not a quitter anyway!
But...
Am finding it hard to meet the right people for me...
But...
Nobody told me to avoid the area i live... I asked around at work, not one ever said a thing... Then once I had moved in, they all started to tell me how unsafe Latimer Sq can be at times...
But...
Last night, I walked home & walked past 7 (SEVEN) police car nearby my house... All arresting people in their houses....
But...
The other week, one of my staff was victim of attempted rape while walking home from work...
But... But... But...
Is this really the life I was looking for???

It really isnt that bad, seems as though you got unlucky with your first place to live (some of the local lasses there might be friendly enough though....for a fee) but the bar there, the Bicycle Thief is nice enough. The quake damage doesnt help to make it any more amenable.
Soon as you can, get yourself out into the nicer suburbs; Merivale, Papanui, St Albans etc if you can afford them, but if not there are plenty of nice places further out.
And seriously, if you've got any questions feel free to PM me.

funny how people see different sides that i have never noticed.
To me it's about the safest place I have ever lived.

Hi
I ve only been here 2 days but I can say how warm and friendly the people have been to us so far . Crime is present every where you go and I dare say I shall encounter some form or another. So I will keep you posted but on first impressions Christchurch appears a lovely city

A friend (nurse) chooses her shifts very carefully as she has to walk through Hagley Park in Christchurch to get to work, and she says it's not so safe at night.
But, to put it into perpective, there were places in Manchester I wouldn't walk when it was DAYTIME
My colleagues actively promote the University as a safe environment to overseas students - the stats for student safety here in ChCh are excellent compared to Auckland, and miles better than the University cities in Australia.
