$20 an hour for trade work? Are you sure? That is very low and below the usual rates even for a final year apprentice.
Are you a qualified tradie, as the going rate should be $25/$30 an hour.
Regardless. If you are looking to come and experience another country for a while , then that low rate could be manageable with care. If you are looking to settle here however, you need to be earning a 'going rate' from outset

I don't think you are mad. At 23 yrs the world's your oyster ( or is it lobster!) and as long as you can get back to the UK if things don't work out, you probably haven't got much to lose. Go for it, it will be an amazing experience for you to come to New Zealand.
