Alternatives to flying ??

My Dad wants to come and visit for a few weeks but he wont fly (health and being a stubborn old man)
The old sailing passenger liners have gone now and he doesn't want to just stop off for a few days as offered on the ROW cruises.
Does anyone know of any other options for him.

I'm looking for a particular site where enthusiasts talk about this type of travelling but this is a bit of an example.
So is this one

Tis the only method I can think of short of thumbing lifts and using several types of animal.

Would be dull at times, but also quite a good experience to hitch a ride on a Frieght ship.

Just me?

Ok ....

Whats dull when you are young can be bliss when you are older.

It wouldn't have ready made entertainment and overly fancy frills but would still be a quite enjoyable method of getting from A to B.

I'm surprised at the price to be honest.

I was expecting a voyage to be much less than that.

Why?

The time at sea can be extensive and it's not hitching a ride as such. There is still food and board to consider. Look at the days at sea and the daily rate. It may seem more reasonable.

It won't have the fancy frills the the bums on seats cruises have but it will still get a person from A to B

I don't know, there might be some excitement if the ship sails through the Suez Canal, as it passes the east coast of Africa.

The QM2 sails from Southampton eastbound on a world tour beginning January each year. Or he could hop on one cruise ship to another...until he arrives in NZ.

Only problem is that it isn't cheap, could easily get a business or even first class fare for the same cost. Which may be enough for some people alleviate any health worries.

I just had a price point in my head and was surprised, that's all.

This is a good point, however;

Just for the 'living person who has done it without flying' thing:

My uncle got from the UK to Australia by hitching a ride by various means and some were animals...!

He loved it. However, for context; he did this in his 20s, probably had a couple of nights sleeping rough as he's not the most organised person in the world and barely had a penny to his name so he had to work his way through on odd jobs etc. Proper 'old school' methods by today's young 'un standards...
