ALE
Hi all.
Not being a regular drinker of beer since coming here I am wondering if any of you hearty beer drinkers out there can tell me what is the nearest thing to either Boddingtons or St Austell Ales. I am not sure what I am looking for, most of the time OH buys Lager but I like the odd glass of what I call real Ale. Any suggestions, I used to love the creamy taste of a boddies in summer back home.

Re: ALE
From memory New World do a selection of real ales including Old Speckled Hen, Youngs, Black Sheep, and a couple of others.
You may be able to find them in the chiller cabinets near to the wine aisles!

Monteiths Original is quite a good drink too.

Re: ALE
A bar guy (a nz beer expert) said to me on Monday night at the hotel bristol, lion brown is a completly natural and superb quality (wellington) Real Ale too. but most of young kiwi generation think/it is recognized as crap, naff and old fashioned something etc which is NOT true. so I had lion brown on that night...........cos that guy.... yeah. I can drink it but not fancy.
I too like Speights but I've heard they use chemical quite a bit. Speights old dark is decent dark ale though..........
don't actually know what is the nearest thing to your british standard.............sorry about that. Well. I do not particulary crave imported British ales/or any kind of bottled beer here - don't like them much as I do always much prefer fresh tap one to bottled one.

Re: ALE
You're kidding right???????? Although are products of 'God's own county' the beer started in 1822 in Leeds bewery by Joshua (due to shut in 18 months grrrrr), the tea was started also in 1822 but by Joseph and Edward Tetley - they have been bought out by Tata Group in 2000.
I don't think they were related directly....though being Yorkshiremen we are are all related through blood!
Other fine beers from the real Gods Own...Black Sheep (used to be Theakstons), Old Parculiar, John Smiths, Sam Smiths, (both from Tadcaster as well as Magnet Ale - ugh!) ....

Re: ALE
I've seen Boddies, Tetleys, London Pride, Greene King, Belhaven and a whole heap of other imports at Fresh Choice Supemarket. They do some great local micro-brewery beers too.
They've even got Magners Cider which makes me feel right at home.....especially in Summer over ice.
mmmmm.....nice!
