I will be booking our one way ticket on receipt of our visa's. Which airline would you recommend.

I just got back with Air NZ, they were fab, seats in ecnomy fairly decent. Hubby is 6'2 and found the legroom fine, reasonable seat pitch and on demand tv excellent.

We will be travelling with our two girls age 6 and 2, and fancy doing a stop over somewhere for a few days rather than push them through a 24 hour trip. Views from families with experience of other airlines, what made them special and luggage allowances for emigrating.

Having flown with Emirates on a number of occasions and thinking they are excellant I can't wait to try a 5* one Singapore Airlines when I fly in June.

I think the general consenus on here is fly east rather than via USA b'cos less stressful immigration/transit procedure.

We were really impressed with Singapore Airlines, not so much about the Changi airport, it smelled musty and the carpets were designed by someone with a large hangover. But yes, the video games keeps the kids occupied for ages, good food, attentive service from beautiful stewardesses, aaaah was i dreaming ? It seems so long ago (1st Jan)

Air NZ via LA. No real problem with immigration in LA, just means getting off the plane for an hour or so and sitting in the transit lounge with free tv, tea, coffee, water, crisps, apples, biscuits etc. which was great. Then back on same plane and off to NZ. Air NZ great in flight entertainment for adults and kids. Excellent food and non-stop drinks. and very comfy seats. Plus you get baggage allowance of 2 suitcases each of 23kg (so 46kg each person) plus your hand luggage. This baggage allowance is LA only. Air NZ via Hong Kong is 20kg per person. We didn't want to stopover anywhere. Found the flight fab, no jetlag at all, and would rather just get there in least time poss! Hope this helps.

So take your pick really!!!!! We'd probably fly NZ if we go back to the UK for a visit but that's purely cos we haven't seen Hong Kong!!

For many reasons, I would not choose the national carrier. A greater luggage allowance is a big thing, but it still wouldn't make me fly with that lot again. Go East - unless you can fly with someone other than the national carrier or any company code-sharing with them.

I'm going with Air NZ on saturday, can anyone tell me what the tv is like. The last long haul trip I did, I watched about 4 films, what films are Air NZ showing at the mo and whats the kids tv like for a 6yr old?

It depends if you're going on one of the old bangers or a better, newer version. The old bangers have one of those two inch screens placed about 30 feet from you and the selection is rubbish. I hear the newer versions are better and I even heard a rumour that they have some screens in the backs of seats now!

Whichever airline you choose, make sure to tell them, you are emigrating and ask if they can increase your luggage allowance. Worked for us with Signapore Airlines when we moved over.

I don't get why some think Air NZ have poor entertainment

There were 50 films to choose from, over 50 cds, stack loads of games, tv programmes, documentaries, radio programmes, comedy, kids stuff - maybe this has only been available recently - but I would have thought that was more than enough choice for even the pickiest traveller!!!

The food and choices of menu were good and portion sizes were too much really (and we love our food!). We flew economy. Nothing was too much trouble for the flight attendants and we had a comfortable, enjoyable flight.

We are emigrating next week and are using Air NZ again. Just for comparison we asked Singapore airlines what baggage allowance we would get if we flew with them and they said none, not possible, neither was there any extra allowance going Air NZ via Hong Kong.

But then what's great to one person can be someone else's hell, I guess. We had a great flight, no complaints, hence would recommend.

We flew Air NZ in April, and The Departed, The Queen, The Prestige, Miss Potter, Eragon, Blood Diamond, Casino Royale, The Holiday, The Illusionist to mention just a few, were on.

My kids watched Flushed Away, Open Season, and the old classics were on like Lion King, Little Mermaid, Toy Story etc. Fab!!! Though all = 4 very jetlagged people as we didn't sleep, just watched movies for the whole flight !!!

Totally agree!!! And it's not new - we flew Air NZ when we emigrated last April, and the in-flight entertainment was just as good then!!
I would go as far as saying that with kids, I wouldn't want to fly another airline!

Yes they certainly do, in their 777's. Individual good sized screens with your very own individual remote control, headphones provided, and you can tilt the screen to adjust should the person in front of you choose to recline their seat, so that you can still see your own screen perfectly well. And as everyone seems to use these if you want to sleep you are not disturbed as it is very peaceful on the plane with no multi watch drop downs on the go constantly
