Default Air New Zealand

Hey there!

Been looking at flights to NZ and on the way back to UK there are a couple of options one goes to LA and seems to stop for a good few hours and the other flight says its via LA but doesn't show any stop over times. Just wondering what happens if you go the via option, do you get off the plane at all?

Hi Air NZ do a stop off at LA for about 2hrs on straight through flights, you have to disembark, go through US security and wait in the transit lounge before getting back onto plane for rest of journey. We are flying back via Cook's & LA...we'll have 4hrs in LA transit lounge Had heard lots of horror stories about being hearded through LA but wasn't really that bad for us on our way over.

If you have the time and money, use it as a nice stopover for a couple of nights and go stay in cool Santa Monica for a couple of days, helps break up the nasty long flight all the way back to Heathrow and avoid the hassle of the transit lounge

Thanks to you both. Its possible I may travel back alone so dont really want have to stay overnight, but santa monica is beautiful so I would love to stop there another time. Is there a shop or anything in the transit lounge? Also is the transit lounge when you get off the plane or is it in a totally different part of the airport... never travel alone so I'm a bit worried

We passed the transit lounge on our way down to go through checks, then came back up an escalator I think and it was literally a couple of minutes walk from there to the transit lounge. They provide fruit, drinks and muffins as well as having a toilet to freshen up in. They also opened a wee duty free shop. HTH

Much the same for us.....was half asleep so don't remember much about walk from plane to lounge, going through US security...having fingerprints scanned, falling asleep again I do remember there were fruit, drinks & pkts of crisps available....didn't eat there (was asleep!) but took some back on plane. Washrooms were good....more space than on the plane! Some magazines dotted about but no duty free shop for us

Don't worry you won't be allowed to get lost! Remember to do the electronic form at least 72 hrs brfore you travel if you haven't transitted through US before, theres a link on Air NZ site.
