Well probably good that no new UK citizens trying to come here saw the Aftershock last night, no one would come and live in Wellington after that, not the best advert for NZ and it will happen but lets hope not for a few more years.

As a newbie here 18 months ago, we were quite proactive initially in ensuring we had our grab bags sorted etc. However, like most Kiwis we have spoken to about it, we too have adopted the 'she'll be right mate' attitude to the subject lately. Watching last night, however, certainly made us stop and think even though we are on South Island We definitely would feel the effects of something like that if the information is accurate that they gave.

I think the follow up tonight will be quite an eye opener tonight too.

Being a sad JAFA we have our Emergency kit and ideas of where to meet if we are apart if anything happens. But our kiwi freinds think we have lost the plot and just laugh at us. Oh well :-)

Watching the looters my OH said 'they can take the TVs - I'll be in the sweet shop scoffing jelly beans'

Our emergency kit consisted of a huge bottle of water until after the storms a while ago our water turned a funny colour and I wouldn't drink it so now we have none at all - it did make us think though.

We are woefully unprepared and given we live a good half hour from the nearest anywhere this is Not Good At All. I noted recently that our civil defence station is our local pub- 13 mins drive from here over several small bridges and one massive one

I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're all talking about!

Could someone to tell me please, as we are moving to NZ early next year & I'd like to know what we're letting ourselves in for! Should I be worried?

Oh, I don't really know what they're talking about because I don't have a TV but I guessed the whole earthquake/volcano malarky. Here in Hawkes Bay we get shaken about with fair frequency.

We have an Emergency Kit ready here too..... but we dont know anyone else who has one. Some English people we know seem to not even know that NZ gets earthquakes and is at risk from Tsunami.

I saw the program last night and have tonights recorded and will probably watch it tomorrow now as its getting near bedtime for me!

Please don't say people don't know about the faults running the length of NZ we are on the most active fault line in the world and if you live here you are constantly being told to prepare for the big one, which will happen one day and if near a major city like Wellington will be catastrophic. We all live here in that knowlege you just prepare and hope it never happens in our life time, but as we are told it is over due.

Honestly..... we just get funny looks from people when we say we have a kit and whats in it... it is rather comprehensive I have to say. OH being a Fire Fighter helps as he takes it really seriously. I dont know one single person whos got an Emergency Kit, or even thinks about it. I find it amazing people dont do more research about NZ before moving here.... or know anything about the place they live in.

Sadly I missed the last half of the programme last night as Hubby wanted to watch the Sarah Connor Chronicles ...

Cheryl, a lot of people say they wouldn't live here in the Mount or Papamoa as it is at serious risk of a tsunami if the worst happened. Think about it, it's a very narrow stretch of land/peninsular. They tested the tsunami warning last summer and I didn't even hear it - probably too bust shouting at the kids!

We don't have an emergency kit, nor do we know anyone who does, and I live my life by the premise of what will be will be (save your lectures people ... ) otherwise I'd find another reason not to get out of bed every morning.
