Default After Kaikoura...

Hello all.

We are driving to Christchurch for 2 nights in mid-Feb, followed by a night in Kaikoura for whale-watching. Does anyone have any ideas where to stay the night after Kaikoura prior to getting back on the ferry at Picton?

Many thanks.

Other than a scenic drive north, there's not much in the way of townships, and therefore accommodation between Kaikoura and Blenheim. I've mentioned this website before, which is essentially owners renting out their holiday homes - www.bookabach.co.nz, and it has worked out well for me when I've used it in the past. However, it's probably more suited to stays of more than one night. For accommodation in Marlborough, you have the wine areas around Blenheim, or the rather nice Sounds area, the harbour town of Picton itself, but I rather like Havelock as well.
A consideration would be what time your ferry sailing is? Other than that, decide what your priorities are - do you want to go out for a nice meal (Havelock!!), visit wineries (Blenheim area), or just have a stroll about and be near the ferry (Picton). Picton is overnight-stop central - it's what the town is set up for - and IMHO is a bit sad for that reason...people just passing through. And, nothing is open late at night for a meal for example.
A good guide should be the Qualmark rating for any motel - there are some 4.5-star rated properties in that area.

Thanks for your replies. We need something that will keep a 6 year old occupied as well as ourselves!

Top Ten . Picton.

It has a pool. kids playground and a games room.

Also there is Eco Aquarium at Picton.
