Advice on what to bring in luggage allowance

Okay, the countdown is officially on - less that 3 weeks to go. With Singapore Air, we have 40 kg each, for 2 adults and 2 toddlers.

Apart from the standard clothes, what other stuff would you guys recommend? For example, did anyone bring bedding, cutlery, sports gear, toiletries etc?

Cheers folks

I think the main item of choice was the Wii, not the board mind you. We also bought a couple of hard drives. pain in the butt having to remove from pockets, bags but so glad we did. Son's Marmite stash but as we had already been alternating the Kiwi Marmite and UK Marmite we could of done with out it. Can't think of much else that isn't your general packing

Def bring a couple of UK 4 way leads then you can just fit a couple of NZ plugs to get you away. Go get a couple of pairs of Boots Polaroid shades for the bright sun. Apart from that make sure the wife and kids have familiar things for the down moments....and good luck with the transition...:fingerscrossed:

p.s I sat down and listed pro's and con's of our move prior to departure and still refer back to that for when the memory starts to play it's inevitable trick...;)

Any paper work you just might need in the first few weeks.

I did bring a new set of cutlery, still in it's original packaging. It matched a set I already had coming in the container. I also brought 2 sets of new towels but washed once ( I still get the majority of my towels from M&S as the hand towels and bath sheets are smaller here). I brought a couple of my cooking utensils too, to save me having to double up.

None of these things are strictly necessary but I'm anally retentive . Mostly we brought clothes, a few toiletries, shoes and a couple of books. Didn't have reading devices in 2007 (I don't think). We put our paperwork in our hand luggage and copies of some paperwork (passport, birth/marriage certs etc.) in our main luggage.

We have found non prescription medical items to be much pricier over here- wart remover, travel sickness tablets, compede plasters, branded pain killers etc if you use (or may use) these. Xbox games are much more expensive here, as are books and batteries (if you have a pound shop near you, stock up). You can get almost all 'british' food (but it is expensive). We are struggling to find decent gravy powder or tomato ketchup and may have to bite the bullet and buy bisto and Heinz!

Just remember that amount of luggage kg is for international only ,if your going internal it's mainly 22 kg , we were lucky when we landed at chch , we told them we were emigrating , and they let us off .

very good advice from Fooferfish, you do need to check all the airlines you are flying with for their individual luggage allowance.

Cheers guys - yes, I have already done that. Singapore air were looking extra money to update the tickets so they all stated 40 kg even though my travel agent had already asked them about it initially. So all my flights now state 40 kg allowance, including the connecting Aer lingus flight from Belfast to London. So I 'think' we are covered but who knows!

I want to bring a double buggy: phil and ted, it weighs about 15 kg. The airlines have said that it has to be part of the 40 kg allowance, but we can use it in the terminals but they place it in the hold when we board. Anyone have experience of this?

I've flown enough times to know there will hiccups along the way - grrrrrr

We flew from Canada, via the US, Auckland to Wellington. The only times we got our buggy back were when we entered a new country and had to go through customs. Even though we were promised it back every time we asked, when we landed we were told everything had been checked through. We were given a ride though instead. Are you flying with car seats? We were lent a little frame thing with wheels that you attach to the car seat to pull them along in that. Worth its weight in gold.

cheers dashie - we were told you can hire carseats really cheap in NZ from plunket - are UK kid seats okay to use in NZ anyway? If so, we'll ship em. Might see if we can get a run in a cart though! boys would love that lol.

UK seats, yes I believe so. They were last time I checked anyway :) and yes, the ride in the cart is great for popularity with small children.

There's a company in NZ called Baby On The Move and they hire out car seats, travel cots etc. we used them when we first arrived and they were really good.

As for what to pack, I found my Leatherman to be very useful, also it's a good idea to scan important documents, references, passports etc and have them on a hard drive or phone/laptop as it comes in handy when filling out tenancy applications or other paperwork which require copies to be sent electronically.

Your original paperwork
Sentimental light stuff
English food items! Really ? Get over it, you can (if that critical get hold of most things - yes more expensive) but start as you mean to go on, new adventure....places like countdown and specialist stores will remove cash from you should you need a fix of something Precious that you MUST have...
Adapters for hinges like electric toothbrushes and shaver been the only thing we'd wished we'd sorted. Oh and some warmer clothing for nighttime.... It gets cold..
