Advice for a nurse please?
 

Hi, I am thinking of putting my EOI in, and as a qualified nurse I was wondering what the chances are of getting selected without a job offer? I know that if I have a job offer then the points will mean I will be selected, so is that the best way to go? Thanks in advance for any tips. Jan.

Hi Janet
It all depends on how many points you have.
At every draw those with 140 points or over will be selected, job offer or not.
Just about all draws will also include those with over 100 and less than 140 whose EOI includes a job offer.

It is extremely unlikely you'd get selected without a job offer if you have less than 140pts and you'd effectively be wasting your money. The EOI stays in the pool for 6mth and if not selected in that time, it is withdrawn.
Very occasionally the draw will pull out those with points for work experience in an area of absolute skills shortage but this is rare. Not all nursing specialities are on the LTSSL so you'd have to check for yourself.

Have you got your NZ nursing registration organised yet? http://nursingcouncil.org.nz/ I believe this can take a little time to get sorted, so I would start this first before putting an EOI in.

Hi there

When we applied back in 2006 I had already obtained my NZ registration, which took about 3-4 months and did cost quite a few $$$.

We had more than the required points without a job offer, but I did secure a job offer and this actually put us towards the top of the pile for consideration for PR and so we had the PR done and dusted in about 6 weeks.

I would say though that even with a lot of experience as a nurse (15+ years at the time of application) - it is still quite difficult to secure a job that you want at the level it should be. Seems to be a common theme that irrespective of experience, you start towards the lower end of grading as your experience hasn't been gained in NZ:blink:

some nursing positions have been removed from the lists so have you checked that? also I believe you have to have at least 2 yrs experience now as well.

I'm a nurse, I had a job offer and my EOI was selected straight away, and my application has been approved in principal already - but need to have nurses registration. Mine took a few months to sort out.

Speak to some of he recruitment agencies - they were helpful :)

Thanks for all your replies, will get my registration sorted asap. I do have about 30 years experience but still don't expect to go in at the top. I am working in aged care at the moment so hoping to get work in that field.

I think contacting agencies is a good move. I was offered 2 roles through Medacs (I had worked for them in the UK) and we still use them at work. The other one (in Auckland anyway) that seems to be good for aged care work is Frontline Health - Debbie Glen who runs it seems to be on the ball.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you need evidence of your nursing registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand to actually get the points.

There is quite a process for registration and you will need to pass the English language testing too.

I see that you have experience in aged care, if you wanted to work outside of the District Health Boards another alternative is BUPA. They are one of New Zealand's largest aged care employers. Check out the link below

Thanks for the info, I assume it's the academic IELTS test needed, will have to get practicing, I'm a bit rusty on essay writing! It says the fees vary, wondering how much it is compared to the OET?

I was told to sit the IELTS which I did.. Cost £135 in west London. Results tomorrow� ���� I found it hard and was there at the test centre 8.30-16.00!
Once I have passed then I will apply to register.
