Default Actual outgoings and living costs..

Hi

we know what we will have each month from my salary and some income from the UK. We know what our rent will be, day care costs and approximate food and socialising costs what we are less clear on is bills..

We are a family of 4 (two young boys) and will be living in a 4 bed house. What sort of costs are heating, electricity, internet, car costs, diesel tax costs etc.. also anything Ive missed? Andrew (my OH) is able to stay home for a while whilst we settle the kids in but we would like to see how much longer we could eek this out for. He is a high earner but this means high burn out and that is NOT why we are moving to NZ so we would like time for him to explore other options.... Would some of you mind sharing a breakdown of approximate monthly costs?

Thanks in advance, Emma

We are a family of 4 with 2 small kids too. Our bills are:

Electricity: over the year averages out at about $170/month. No gas so that includes all cooking, heaters etc. House not kept as warm as a UK house otherwise bill would huge.

Phone and internet: $85/month

Car costs: WOF is about $50 every 6 months. Rego is $285 a year. Obviously any repair costs too (been very lucky so far with my 16 yr old car)

Insurance - house,contents and 2 x cars - $185/month

Sky: $60/month

Mobile: I'm on PAYG, about $15/month for me, other half's work pay for his.

Rates (only if you own a house): $145/month

Water rates (ours is metered - not everywhere in NZ is, sometimes they are included in general rates): $50-60/month

That's all I can think of at the moment. If your kids are at school there is voluntary donation (not everyone pays it), possibly uniform (though quite a few primaries don't have uniform) plus all the usual school trip/fundraising requests.

Similar to rush and a push, electric is lowest $170 upto $400 in winter,
Phone internet & sky $150
Mobile is $19 a month x2
We don't pay water but our rates are $4000 a yr, about $300ish a month
Fuel is $100 a fill up normally last 7/10days
Kids clubs scouts $300 yr each then any camps on top of that
Kids term fees about $400 yr for two kids, no uniform but I know college uniforms are horrendously expensive $85 a jumper. Stationary pack is $30 each
My food bill averaged out is approx $300 a week inc meat
Whilst the bills etc are managable it's the other stuff I find hard, getting presents for other kids, anything under $10 is rubbish so you end up spending $20, getting a decent birthday cake $90 (friend is making it) nothing like you get in sainsburys here, kids want to go to cinema a family about $80, meal out for 4 if you find a cheap restuarant $80-100, a nice restuarant for two will take you over $100
We have never worried about money, not that we were rich but we had overdraughts and credit cards in UK, here we don't want them, so we are watching our cents. We have $270 to last us till Wednesday, May sound a lot but when car needs filling most of that is gone. We rarely save any money at the moment I'm not working at the moment so this is on hubby's wages.
We do love it here and there are more free things to do here. Lots of places do gold coin donation days, so wait for them, there's always offers in newspapers so use them, and get yourself an entertainment book, great value for money
Hope this helps

Thanks for thos illustrations. Really helpful. We have an income of 120000 to start with so it looks as though it should work out ok for a bit. Andrew can find a way to earn some cash at a later time.

Moonie I saw your boys on tv. They made me cry with how grown up, senisible, intelligent and empathetic they were. I want our boys to be like that at their age. We were on wanted down under last yr!! I wonder how many expats the bbc have had something to do with! ... maybe immigration nz should give them a finders fee...
