Acceptable Standard Of Health - deaf?
Hi.
I'm wondering if anyone could help regarding the 'Acceptable Standard Of Health' criteria on the immigration operations manual.
My wife is deaf and wears a hearing aid. She falls around the mid 80 mark in decibels on her hearing test, however, according to the operations manual, severe hearing loss would be considered not up the the standard of health NZ require. Here is the paragraph:
I have potentially got a job offer and we happened to come across this the other day. It's not something they tell you when checking the criteria and if you fit it. Otherwise we would have been aware right from the start.
Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

They are very strict with things like this, you could apply fir a medical waiver. Lane neve is a immigration law firm with lots of experience in this, however its will be expensive and you still might not get the outcome you want.

You are correct in that your wife's lack of hearing would be deemed 'significant' . Makes me a bit cross TBH as people with loss of hearing and eyesight are perfectly well able to lead normal independent lives.
The application would go straight for a medical referral and then likely, I am afraid to say, rejected. As Inkedinnurse states , you could and perhaps should solicit the view and advice of a firm such as Lane Neave. They are very reputable and should be able to give you an honest guideline before advising to progress or stop any application.

Thank you for the replies.
I have contacted Lane Neave so hopefully they will be able to assist me with this.
I started a new thread for this and another situation we’re facing. It also has a bit more information on so feel free to have a look. Hopefully we will be able to get some answers but it’s so frustrating as there is no clear answer.
The wording in the ops manual is quite specific and for the deafness it states ‘where significant support is required’ and my wife doesn’t require any support, only her hearing aid.
