Re: Accents - Do New Zealanders like the British accent?
[QUOTE=Likewise, all native English speakers, from Kiwis to Canadians and Americans to Saffas speak English with a dialect, not an accent! :p
[/QUOTE] A dialect has distinct vocabulary, pronunciation and idioms (as in "What fettle, bonny lad?"). As opposed to pronouncing regular English words or phrases with a regional accent. I can't see Kiwis, Canadians or Americans easily using English dialect. What they have is a different accent. Pete |

Re: Accents - Do New Zealanders like the British accent?
My wife is a Kiwi and has been over here in the UK for 11 years; 5 years in London and 6 in the Midlands (Black Country to be precise), where I am originally from. To me she still sounds Kiwi, although a few things have either a cockney or Black Country twist, but to her family (back in NZ) she sounds like a POM and they don't half take the mick :D

I was posting in the Aussie forum a few days ago to see what people thought. Very few people thought it would make a difference, although some thought it might make a difference in areas where there were very few Brits.
What do people think in NZ? Are most of the major cities (Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland) interested in any variations of the British accent? Or are there too many Brits in all these cities for people to care? PS: hoping to travel to NZ when in Australia at the end of this year. |

Re: Accents - Do New Zealanders like the British accent?
Even after 10 years in NZ I was asked today where in Scotland I was from !!!
I've a strong Northeast "accent" not quite a true Geordie but Kiwis often mistake this for Scottish. Gill |
