I just wanted to say thank you to all of you for your kind words and thoughts. This is the most difficult part of expat life, being away from family when tragedy strikes. But is really helps alliviate the sense of isolation having this contact and support from others.

Have just managed to contact family in Christchurch. It appears my sister was in the CTV building. I'm feeling totally gutted. Just want to go home but wouldn't be able to get into Christchurch anyway. Keep praying that she was one of the fortunate few who were pulled out alive and that she is hospitalised somewhere and can't contact us.

A 75 member Los Angeles Urban Search and Rescue Team left tonight for NZ. They are earthquake specialists, doctors, engineers - have all kinds of specialized equipment - went to Haiti - not bringing the dogs because of your quarantine restrictions. Hope they are useful for you. All the best.

My best friend in Oz is a Kiwi and we still have no news on her little grand-son and his mother as they haven't been able to get phone contact.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred 10km south-east of Christchurch at 12:51, February 22, 2011. Depth (focal depth): 5km. The National Crisis Management Centre has been activated and a National State of Emergency has been declared (www.beehive.govt.nz).
The Christchurch CBD and Lyttelton have suffered considerable damage with a number of collapsed or seriously damaged buildings. Aftershocks could lead to further building damage or collapse. There is a cordon around the four avenues of the central business district. Damage assessment is ongoing.
Power, telecommunications and essential services continue to be disrupted. Restoration work is progressively providing increased utility services. Extensive liquefaction throughout the impacted area has caused additional management and restoration issues.
A large number of people have been pulled alive from collapsed buildings.
Priorities for the response remain the support of the urban search and rescue operation, the treatment and care of injured or affected individuals, and the coordination of national resources in support of the local response.
National resources continue to be deployed in support of the local response.
To date approximately 1000 persons have been moved out of Christchurch to Wellington or Auckland by the established air bridge.
Damage assessment is ongoing and over time will provide a better understanding of the extent of damage.

- There are reports of widespread building collapse (especially in the central city).
- 71 fatalities have been confirmed. This figure is expected to rise.
- Reports of missing are being collated and a verification of data is being undertaken.

- Expect aftershocks. Each time one is felt, drop, cover, and hold on.
- Check yourself first for injuries and get first aid if necessary before helping injured or trapped persons.
- Check on neighbours, friends and family in their local area.
- Assess your home or workplace for damage. If the building appears unsafe get everyone out. Use the stairs, not an elevator and when outside, watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines. Stay out of damaged areas.
- Look for and extinguish small fires if it is safe to do so. Fire is a significant hazard following earthquakes.
- Listen to the radio for updated emergency information and instructions.
- Do not overload phone lines with non-emergency calls.
- Do not use any lifts anywhere in Christchurch.
- Do not sight-see in affected areas - this is causing congestion and impacting on response vehicles. Roads are for lifelines and emergency services.
- Help people who require special assistance - infants, elderly people, those without transportation, families who may need additional help, people with disabilities, and the people who care for them.

The very unpleasant thing is also that there is still no way of predicting earthquakes. There is no logic about them. You can't say that if you have just had one you are not in for another for some time to come. Indeed, it was only 5 months ago when there was that earlier earthquake. The next one could very well be in 100 years time or it could be next week.

This morning I cried my eyes out while reading news on the internet. and unable to eat my breakfast.
knowing ppl in CHCH no water no foods. thinking of them how on earth... I couldn't swallow my food... they are starving and hungry... no place to stay...

It was also mentioned in the news that a lot of foreign nationals are included in the list of missing people, especially Japanese people of whom about 20 were in the CTV-building when the quake happened.
