24 hrs in Wellington
Booked a last minute trip to Wellington and we are off tomorrow!
We have two girls 3 and 5. So the only confirmed trip we are doing is a visit to the zoo.
Are there any "must do's" for kids when we are there?

I don't know if your children are Sushi obsessed but there's sushi bars on Featherston Street. They blowtorch the sushi before serving just for a glaze, the sushi is served cold.
The restaurant at the Rydges Hotel, also on Featherston Street is lovely. I think they have a childrens menu.
On Courtenay Place there's a café called, 'Sweet Mother's Kitchen' a New Orleans themed café. Not to everyone's taste.
You can tell I don't have kids !
Butlers Chocolate Café lets you choose a chocolate from the cabinet to go with your coffee. Might not be a good idea for kids !

If you like walking, take a walk to red rocks, about 90mins walk each way, fairly flat, and go and see the seal colony. an awesome sight
Head to the end of Owhiro parade, park in the car park and then walk along the coast, my 8 & 11yr old loved it

Red Rocks walk is good if you want to see some seals and maybe the odd penguin.
Also have a walk round the waterfront. You can hire the big family bikes or do some watersports or a helicopter ride.
Days Bay Ferry from Wellington waterfront is a good trip. Drops off and picks up in Seatoun and the island in the harbour as well as Days Bay. With kids I'd recommend Days Bay just for brunch at one of the cafes there.
You could hire bikes and ride up and down the Hutt River. You can start in Petone at the opposite end of Wellington harbour and ride 25km without any bother stopping for picnic or a splash in the river.
Your probably not going to experience a hot Wellington day but Scorching Bay beach is beaut and there's good food to be had in the cafe there Scorch O Rama.
Zealandia isn't that good in my opinion. Just a mass of bush and tracks with nothing much to see.
Away from Wellington a must is just to stand at Paekakariki lookout to see the breathtaking view out to Kapiti Island and up the Kapiti Coast.
Staglands is also quite good near Upper Hutt if your kids like a walk around the bush with farm animals, reindeer and birds.

Thank you very much everyone.
We had a big earth quake here as well on Sunday, so gonna give Te Papa a miss. So the (vague) plan is, get into Wellington at 2pm, cable car/park, dinner, get the kids down. In the morning head off to the Zoo, have lunch, go shopping and get the ferry.
Is the mexican kiosk on the waterfront any good? Can we get a decent pair of jeans around the CBD?
That's it, will post a trip report.

Hurricane Jeans looks like a good jeans shop on Manners Street or Willis Street. The prices might make you go
Don't know about the Mexican kiosk on the waterfront, I haven't seen one there.
Go and find the bronze life size statue of a naked man on the waterfront boardwalk - it's art ! You kids might get a giggle out of seeing his butt naked butt.
The Wellington Waterfront is about 5kms long if you measure it from the cake tin (Westpac Stadium) to the start of Oriental Parade, Oriental Bay.

Got back last night and we had a great time. Went to the Zoo, Frank Kitts park and the botanical gardens. Did not have time really for anything else.
Loved the hotel location on Cuba St.
Girls had a great time, but got tired with the pace. Zoo was very hilly for our 3 year old, lots of piggy back from Dad.
Wife managed to spend a small fortune on clothes in the space of a hour.
Weather was great and we really would like to go again!

Excellent. Glad you all had a great time. Who fell asleep first on the flight home ? My bet it was one of your children.
