How old is your eldest and what skills does he/she have?
Minimum wage
From 1 April 2008 the minimum wage for employees aged 16 years and over will rise to $12.00 an hour before tax. That’s $96 for an eight hour day, or $480 for a 40 hour week.

From 1 April 2008, the training wage will rise to $9.60 an hour before tax. That’s $76.80 for an eight hour day, and $384 for a 40 hour week. The training wage applies to people doing recognised industry training involving at least 60 credits a year.

From 1 April 2008, there will no longer be a minimum wage for youth. Instead there will be a new entrants minimum wage. The new entrants minimum wage will be $9.60 an hour before tax on 1 April, 2008. That’s $76.80 for an eight hour day, and $384 for a 40 hour week. The new entrants minimum wage will apply to some 16 and 17 year old workers.

http://www.ers.dol.govt.nz/pay/minimum.html

New Entrants

The Minimum Wage (New Entrants) Amendment Act was passed on 5 September 2007 and it will change how the minimum wage applies to some people. From 1 April 2008, the adult minimum wage will apply to workers aged 16 years and over and there will no longer be a youth minimum wage. The training minimum wage will remain unchanged. From 1 April 2008, there will be a new entrants minimum wage rate that applies to some employees.
What is the New Entrants Minimum Wage?

A new entrant is a worker who is 16 or 17 years old except if

* they have completed 3 months or 200 hours of employment, whichever is shorter, OR
* they have been supervising or training other workers, OR
* they are subject to the minimum training wage.

How much is the New Entrants Minimum Wage Rate?

From 1 April 2008, the new entrants minimum wage will be $9.60 an hour before tax. That’s $76.80 for an eight hour day, and $384 for a 40 hour week.
When does the New Entrants Minimum Wage Rate come into force?

The new entrants minimum wage will come into force on 1 April, 2008.
How do I know if I have completed 3 months or 200 hours of employment?

The three months or 200 hours includes employment undertaken with more than one employer, that is, the periods of employment are cumulative.

The three months or 200 hours includes employment undertaken before 1 April 2008, provided the employee is aged 16.

Sorry, I have no idea how to answer the question on who are the best employers and who pays the most as there are too many variables. I hope that the information I provided will be useful as a starting point as to what to expect.

I'm curious though, how would you answer the questions you posed if someone was to immigrate to your town or city?

At any rate, enjoy the transition from there to here.

Hi there, and good luck with things upon your arrival.

I would say that your 16yr olds best bet is to go through an employment agency as they tend to have fixed pay rates for staff regardless of age. We (Select Industrial) pay the adult minimum wage ($11.25) or above to anyone working for us, on a parity with the other temps that they are working with, whether 16 or 60.

Where abouts do you intend on settling in ChCh, as this will have an impact on who your kid could look at getting work with?

Hi my friends daughter worked for the warehouse whilst she was still at school and she said they were great employers and i have heard from other people that they treat their staff very well and also quickly recognise and encourage people that use initiative, this girl was 15.
Cant help you with what wage she was on though sorry but they probably have great staff buying priveleges.
Good luck with everything....
Cheers

Hi Mandie,

Sam will get 12 dollars per hour from April and she gets 12.5% discount.. parents get that to.

They have been really good with training and orientation. However she said to tell Connie that you need to work at least 8 hours per week to get staff benefits etc...

Uniform provided and pay weekly.
