10 Foot containers from UK-NZ
Hi all
I have been a 'lurker' of this site for a while, as a british 30 something moving to NZ from a town near brixton i felt advice from others that have done it before me INVALUABLE although none of my experiences could be related to it was helpful to know these things in advance.
So thank you to those who posted on this site, this is my first post, bare with me, im not used to this bloody NZ keyboard layout...damn the Enter |\ key!!!
I came here on a specialist work visa in 2011 and ive been back and forth to uk since then, most of my time has been in NZ, and now i am fed up with not having my...
Tools
Books
Cloths
and all the things ive collected.
Im thinking of buying a home here in about 2 years but i only want to ship my stuff here once, so i plan to buy a few reasonable item in the uk as they are much more exp in nz, ie gas cookers kitchen ware etc.
I reckon most of it would fit in a 10 foot container as a 20 foot would be too big, but i cant find any information on 10 foot shipping.
Id rather not share as ive heard so many horror stories, and i want to pack the container myself, not to mention i would own the container once it arrived.
Any advice on this would be great.
If anyone out there would like to share a 20 foot container if a 10 footer isnt possible maybe that could be an idea...hmmmm.

Hi Simon. Welcome to the forum!
20ft is the minimum container size. You can ask your shipper for a LCL quote (Less than Container Load) and a crate to suit.

Our ex Kiwi neighbours had a 10 foot container in their paddock that they used to ship stuff back from the UK after spending 5 years there. That was 2007.

I shared a container and had no problems at all. All of my stuff came over, some broken may I add.

Thanks for all the replies.
10 foot containers do exist i have one in the uk.
Its a water tight newish one i Got for 1200 quid.
I would like it for a shed if i could get it here.
I would rather have my own 10footer with all my stuff packed by me only opened for official and not sticky fingered packers, searching through my stuff whilst unloading the other stuff that ive shared the container with.
Ive investigated alot and there is a huge amount of corruption and terrible shipping practices, everything i want to bring to nz means alot to me as i sold everything that i knew would not be worth shipping here, everything else is mainly tools and work related stuff, i am fearful of anything going missing.

Pickfords wrapped and sealed everything that went from my house. I didn't think of people looking through my stuff. I'm moving back home in March so I've got to do it all again.

just found out that the MOVING companies want you to share a container as its more profitable for them to do so, i.e if it costs 5k to ship a 20 foot container with the shipping company, then the removals i.e Pickfords divi the space up say, 3 people sharing at 3k each then they make money on it, which is fine, but i may try and do this myself with a 10 footer.
Ill keep you all posted on how this can be done it may be useful to those in future.
Any experience in this regard would be much appreciated.

I shared a container. I only had 350 cubic square feet. Went with Pickfords and they said there was another family's possessions in our container. Didn't bother me at all.
My African oven did get here smashed but the insurance asked me for evidence, which I sent a photo. They also asked me for a website where I could purchase another one. I did this and they have refunded me £500. Easy as that really. I would recommend Pickfords. Their staff were great at home and here.
