I know lots of expats settle around the Amstelveen area, so this might be of interest to you or your partners.

Volunteering is a big deal in the Netherlands, when I say big, I mean massive. Some Dutch people (stay home mothers, retired people) choose to become taalcoaches: language friends. They meet up with you (at your home, the local library, a café, wherever you agree) on a weekly basis, not only to practise Dutch, but also to learn about our Dutch customs and culture. And they help you to learn Dutch (no strings attached).
