Default A Dutch car in UK. (open for sale)

Hello All,

I am currently finding myself in a bit of a pickle. I am a Dutch National living and working in Devon. My Dutch car passed the 6 month stay in the UK and now either needs to be imported or send back to NL.

For insurance and safety reasons I got myself a UK car already and am now a bit stuck with what to do with my Dutch registered car as the MOT will run out soon.

So here is the pickle: I will not be driving it back to NL before MOT runs out. Without MOT no driving at all. MOT checks will be done UK style and to pass these I need to buy different headlights and the basic maintanance costs to have it passed.

Then driving it back to NL it wont pass another MOT there and I might be able to sell it for aprox 2000/1500 euros. But not before making costs and modifications again. And when I sell it I need to have my travelcosts covered to go back home. (plane train etc)

I simply do not know what to do next. | I might be better off scrapping it in the UK and make me a bit of change from scrap.

Thoughts?

You also might well find it somewhat expensive to scrap, a friend wanted to scrap his Spanish registered car in the UK, but he found they wouldn't do it.

IMO. If it's not a desirable car, probably best to cut your losses and scrap it now.

Who are "they", and why wouldn't they buy 1,500kg of scrap steel?

Scrap yard said it was because it wasn't registered in UK, might just have been the scrapyard wanting to avoid any hassle.

Ah yes, probably extra paperwork.

There's also a lot of hazardous materials (engine oil, hydraulic oil, coolant, fuel, battery, gas from the aircon) in a car that nowadays have to be removed and disposed of before it can be put through the crusher.

I suspect that that is the same for British and Dutch cars.

I suspect you may be spot on; but the large rise in the theft of metals mean that legitimate scrappers are now under a lot of pressure to have some kind of provenance about the scrap they buy in. A British registered car can be easily traced via DVLA, not so a foreign registered vehicle. This, plus the fact they now have to pay to dispose of the hazardous materials they have to remove, makes a foreign registered car not so attractive. Hence my original advice, flog the bits with any value, then/or scrap it.

I work in the UK waste industry and a part of my company specialises in "garage wastes" and we re-cycle the metal and some of the hazardous wastes for them; we won't touch anything that doesn't have some paperwork to prove provenance.

Same in the US, more or less, where I dabble in some scrap metal business myself. Things have tightened up a lot over the past 10 years, and I now not only have to provide my photo drivers license, but also have my photo taken and a photo of the scrap I am selling.

That said, after a number of years they know me fairly well at the local scrap dealer, and that nothing I have sold has caused them any problem.

You mention that you won't be able to drive your Dutch car to the Netherlands. Would it be a solution if you find somebody else who can drive your Dutch car back to the Netherlands?

Thanks for pointing this out. I had not noticed the gap in time. Sorry for reviving an old thread.
