Nah Dutch women take the cake on this one by far! Just look up the statistics about the number of women working part-time in NL (and hardly in high-earning jobs), it's close to 80%, and the ones that are working full-time are the foreigners.

What's worse is that we subsidize that lazy lifestyles with our taxes. That is, at some point EU or whatever agency admonished NL for the low female participation in the workforce. NL has responded by providing taks advantages for two income Household that make it attractive for the lazy women to work a bit.

Sorry, but with a mother with 4 children who has always worked full-time I can't help but have a higher standard. What's more she never complained, now it's the norm for mommies to go on about how it's the hardest job in the world....haha.

It sucks for my British colleague, and in fact that first baby was unplanned. The fact remains he was and remains miserable last I heard.

I know people like to perpetuate stereotypes...but the stats speak for themselves...

Edited to clarify: I know several hardworking, nice, and very kind Dutch women (as with any nationality), what I am referring to here are the statistics...which is why I said 'generally' in my initial post.

Working two days a week does sound like a walk in the park...especially when having a baby is a choice, which she made herself actually as that is not what he wanted.

On top of only working two days, she had the standard oma en opa dag, if you are not familiar with it, that's the weekly day where grandma etc come over and take care of the child.

Meanwhile he was working from 8-6 and 9 to midnight. Funniest story he told me was she wouldn't sew a button on his shirt, because nah she was too much of an empowered woman to do that! Poor guy, just a workhorse and a manslave basically.

As a person with a normal sense of fairness, and several male siblings, I just can't fathom taking advantage of someone like that. I also tend to be the high-earner in the couple. I have no tolerance for golddiggers...

thanks ,,,very interesting articles ,,i feel i could have inserted my partners name as a classic example of the 80% part time workforce ,in fact her sister also , but my relationship is slightly different , yes she works part time but for her friend of many years ,, a job she loves and is very good at ,, previous to a serious car accident several years ago she worked full time for many years ,also doing administrative work for her ex husbands building firm whilst raising two very level headed kids,,, whilst she does now fit the stereotypical dutch female ,,,i dont recognise her as one of those women.she is constantly looking to source further part time work ,but on her terms ,,,hours, wages ect , shes very independent ,frugal when necessary generous at other times,,,in part that is why i fell for her, her dutch attitude ,, ,,, some would interpret those articles as a red flag to dating a dutch woman, but buried in all those statistics are women who no matter what will not sacrifice their values concerning raising a family, living her life on her terms,,I could stay in the UK carry on working 10/12 hour days meet the average working British girl ,both be tired stressed, little time for the nicer things in life , but a little richer financially ,,,,,or work in Holland 10 /12/ hour days knowing im going home to a partner who has simply got life sussed ,,,,

I have to laugh at the poster who thinks the Netherlands is foreign and weird

"but it's a culture shock the supermarkets aren't like the U.K. And buying British food is expensive and only possible in specialist shops."

For him/her I suggest a stay in somewhere REALLY foreign !

Maybe it is a windup from a troll ? Or is it that tabloid readers really believe the only normal place is suburban England ?

I know I shouldn't be tempted into reacting a a troll posting that it more than a month old but I am on one of my many many annual leave weeks here in Holland. So I am bored.. I think that our troll friend is also neglecting to mention the fact that it's not just the women who work part-time. I haven't worked on a monday since my eldest was born, 18 years ago. I call it "papa" day. Many enlightened fathers choose to work part-time because we have discovered the right work-life balance.

Welcome to Holland, Jon.

Likewise, I shouldn’t really be piling in on old troll posts either, but I missed what now seems obvious the first time around. If ‘trolley’ thinks that NL supermarkets are ‘off’ then I agree with scot47 – go really foreign, try a Swiss supermarket, or maybe one in Malawi, they can be quite fun as well.

Nice balance you have there. I have never worked on my birthday.

When I was 18-19 I never worked on Thursdays, but that was down to hangovers rather than parenthood.

Oh and they have house cleaners! Yes, plural. If it's so hard, then don't have a second baby!

My mother had 4 and worked full time, no cleaners and oma days! Still does.

Yes, men work part-time too. But there is this little thing called statistics. For Dutch women part-time work is the norm. Very few men work part-time by comparison. And the few men I know that work part-time work 4 days a week, none of that 1.5, 2, 3 days a week bs.

This, of course, is all enabled by the lovely Dutch tax haven, which has been under fire for the last few years and that scrutiny has reached critical mass and it won't go away. With the corporate tax changes coming in the US, the Dutch national treasure will really have to scramble to replace the huge tax income coming from US multinationals that will likely be lost.

Yes, it is a choice, just in case you didn't know that. There is no law in any of the countries involved as far as I know obligating men/women to procreate.

hahaha, an idiot. I'm not British. Moving from Britain to NL doesn't take much effort. Heck, that's easier than moving from NY to Cali, just an hour time change for you!

So no darling, my American self had to have fantastic qualifications to get a blue card to be in NL . Creme de la creme, so I'm not your average Joe and my standards are higher and that is perhaps why I could see what a farce that sad, boring, depressed, suicidal, low service, and lazy country it was!!!

Now finally out of there!!! woo hooo! Back in a sunny place, with happy, polite people. Not Spain yet as I am taking a break. In a house, that is a huge mansion by the sad Dutch standards, of with a pool too

Enjoy those grey skies!!
