Worried about UK settlement visa
Hey folks.
Let me bring you up to speed. I am a UK citizen (born and raised) and my wife of nearly 2 years is a US citizen. We currently live in the US, and I have a greencard. However, we need to go back to the UK permanently. I spoke to someone at the UK embassy, who said that as long as I have money in the bank to support us, and a confirmed place to reside, we should have no problems. The thing that worries me is that all my employments are sales/retail-related, and I have only GCSE's to list as my qualifications. I unfortunately am uneployed at the moment, as is my wife. We both had seasonal jobs over christmas, but did not continue, because we had to prepare for our return to the UK. I am very employable, and not worried in the slightest about either of us finding work once in the UK. We have a fair amount of cash in the bank to survive on when we arrive, and a confirmed roof over our head (my parents). The finances and accomodation we have proof of, but to be blunt, on paper we look like a pair of bums, being that we are both unemployed. This worries me, but we can show the embassy that we can sustain ourselves with our savings, and we have accomodation, therefore we are unlikely to become public charges. We are very young, both in our early twenties- that is why we are unsettled. All we need is to get back to England, and then we will be able to make much stronger contributions to the economy. Can anyone offer any advice? Thank you for your time. |

I know most people may refer you to another newsgroup (if I had the link to give you I would), but I'll just add my experience here. I applied for a settlment visa back in August, and was requested to interview in Los Angeles. My husband, living in England, had a long-term temp job in an office, and I was unemployed in the states. His parents (divorced) both signed to be sponsors and said they would support us and provide a place to live until we could be on our own. Unfortunately that wasn't enough for the IND. After 6 months in review they denied it. But after speaking with the orginal consular officer with whom I had interviewed (they're very good at keeping in touch and answering your questions throughout the process), I learned that our biggest flaw was not having lived independently yet since we've been married and not having any joint savings. So, if you do have money in savings, I think you will have a chance. It seems from my experience that their biggest worry is the applicant her/himself having money to live off of before they find a job. Good luck Ash |
