I also dislike 'Bab' as in ' yow awroyt Bab', particularly when I am addressed by that term by someone 30 years my junior, usually in a shop...... but I must say I love the word CACK.
Theres nothing better than a thick black country accent ''yow awroyt bab '' ,so much broader than the old brummie accent . I was workin in walsall one time and some old boy said to me ''aay yow gooooin down sucker ?'' . i said what ? He was asking if i was going to the pub . |
Re: word i hate most
"like you know" drives me up the wall. Seems every sentence here has that phrase in it and if "I knew" I wouldn't be asking! The north american (canada & america) spelling also drives me mad- tires, grey, color. The number of times I've got into the discussions over this......good way to come out ahead is to ask "what language do you speak?" and the answer is hopefully English so then ask "where am I from" and if you're lucky to get the answer England/UK then you can say "I'm British, we invented the English language therefore I'm right"
Having said that I have a sneaking suspicion that back in the mists of time somewhere the English language may have originated from either German or Welsh....but that's just detail. |
Re: word i hate most
Wife has a pet hate about the way Canadians use the word "bring" instead of "take".
eg "I'm going to a dinner party tonight and I want to bring some wine." Drives her insane  :p |
Re: word i hate most
I always want to 'correct' someone when I hear them saying:
"I axed him for his phone number"/"I axed her to take my kids to school" It irritates me sooo much... (always have visions of an axe murderer chopping away....also dislike the American spelling of axe...they spell it as 'ax') For some reason I think I've only ever heard black Americans say it...maybe it was originally ghetto slang which has now spread across to the mainstream vernacular in the black community? Come to think of it.....there's another word which is in common usage (spoken and written word) by American sports journalists... "the winningest team"...WTF....'winningest'.... |
Re: word i hate most
All the little girls around here who start half there conversations with 'Oh my God' in that stupid Valley Girl way 'oh my gawwwddd':frown:
And 'cute' Your hairs so cute, that tops so cute, your shoes are so cute. WTF I haven't been cute since I was 6. Someone actually called my husband cute at work, he nearly punched them. |

Oooh - another word often used (even by total strangers) as a term of endearment in the northern and parts of the West Midlands, is the word 'duck'! eg. 'hello my/me duck'... I was on a BA transatlantic flight to LHR a few months ago (got upgraded at check-in to Club World) and the stewardess kept calling me 'love'... |
Re: word i hate most
It annoys me when I hear someone say that something is "quite unique" or "very unique".
There are no degrees of uniqueness. It's either unique or it isn't. |
Re: word i hate most
Starting a sentence with 'Look' or 'Ah look'. Heard that quite a lot in Aus. The Victoria Fire Chief seemed to start every sentence with it when he was being interviewed on the radio during the bush fires.

It's pronounced 'ahhhsome' where I am, yes extremely annoying.
Everything you don't like is 'retarded' here, hate that one. Hear that a lot, the person saying it usually thinks they are sounding very erudite. What about skellington and guitar. One of the Mums back in Solihull always said her kids had to go to the doctor about their 'guitar'. I'd never heard 'Bab' till I moved there  |
