Will I be covered by travel insurance after health insurance expires?
Leaving to go back to the UK in about 3 weeks time.
Our health insurance will end here in the US at the end of May.
I was considering buying a travel insurance policy to cover us (myself, wife and son) until we make it back to the UK just in case we have a medical emergency.
I know insurance companies are notoriously difficult to persuade to pay out at the best of times and I was wondering if us not actually going on a standard trip will invalidate the policy? It's not like a normal 3 week holiday - I wouldn't be able to show any proof of a flight out to the USA to start the insurance period. Or would this not matter?

See question 2 in the following link about H1 visas and layoffs. However Cobra applies to people quitting also.

Information on Cobra. Check Q6 about the 60 day grace period.

I left Canada last year and travelled for a couple of weeks before returning to the UK. When I contacted our insurance carrier I was told that as I was would no longer be resident in Alberta that my insurance would no longer apply. I bought insurance through Nomads and had coverage until I set foot in the UK.

The policy cost me about $95 for 2 adults.

Lets face it, you only know it for certain if you claim successfully. I think Michael's thoughts about COBRA are accurate and should work for you.

I don't think that is what he stated. My interpretation is that he left Canada and he was covered prior to landing in the UK. I doubt any travel insurance will cover you for medical before the trip starts or even after arrival in at your new destination during a move.

He won't need the travel insurance once he arrives in the UK, as a British Citizen he will qualify, automatically, for NHS coverage from day 1, however I do agree that he will not be covered while still in Canada, as it is TRAVEL insurance, and that is to a country that is not where you live. He will be living in Canada till his departure, so travel insurance would only cover him for visits to any other country before he arrives back in the UK

Yes. I called them and explained the situation. Travelling in Canada, US and then sailing from NY to UK. Fortunately, I didn't have to test the actual claims process. Two others, that I know of, from the US did the same thing as they were both sailing on the same ship.
