Hi AWP

On your last interesting sentence - is the situation any different if the person you are weighing up is wearing a veil?
What is it that allows us to decide within 10 minutes- smile, handshake, eyes or something else?

Its all to do with the fu** or fight thing that we, as humans have as a legacy from the days when we had to decide very quick what we had to do on meeting someone new.

That would be my only reason, no need to be sarcastic.

As matt says its a survival instinct...do we shag this person, fight them or run the fek away.

Theres a lot involved, from eye contact, to that elusive "chemistry".

But are first impressions always correct. If someone is stressed or not happy they may give a totally different impression if they are happy. I've met people who I've liked initially, but later found out I didn't like them and vise versa.

I personally like to be around them a bit longer before I make a judgement on people, and I also like to study them when they think I'm not. When I've made a decision on them, I generally am not wrong and it has been proven over time, and I've saved a few people who have nearly been ripped off because they have been sold by the person's personality. I know people who you would think butter wouldnt' melt in their mouth and are very popular yet they are monsters behind the veneer and closed doors also I've seen people being trained to make good first impressions, so I tend to keep an open mind.

This is very true, people can project - or at least attempt to project - a favourable impression of themselves.

Some people have a heightened BS detector and others don't. Luckily I find I am able to very quickly weigh someone up and spot the phonies 99% of the time. Other people I know are what you would call gullible...they just don't have the ability to suss people and get caught by the conmen and woment easily.

Most coppers tend to have a good sense of BS detection for obvious reasons....gullible coppers don't last too long.

You may have already mentioned this, you are a policeman here in the US and, what, your joining the force in the UK? If you are, thats a bit of a change.

They become inspectors don't they. I've met a few coppers that either don't trust anyone, or they aren't as streetwise as you would think they would be. I keep an open mind about them too....

LOL very good.

I agree. But on the whole a good copper tends to either have or develop a nose for people. Of course coppers are only human and are drawn from the same pool as the rest of society.
