In a nutshell our situation is this: Both UK citizens, left for Australia 10 years ago, gained Australian citizenship, had a child, now plan to return to the UK. The midget has a UK and Australian passport, we both know out NI numbers, Clare is returning in July and I will be back in the UK in early November.

So, here's the question, has anyone put together a checklist of stuff to sort out when you are planning the move back? Things which need to be addressed before the move, as soon as landed, first month type thing?

We had the foresight to maintain UK bank accounts and credit cards so that will be easy to sort out, what things are we likely to find not so easy?

I just have such a hectic work schedule, I get no time to sit down and plan, my biggest concern is our two small dachshunds.

We are not sure of where to go, but we are thinking Scotland, although finding suitable accommodation from over hear is a bit difficult I would imagine.

First we sold our home (we rent in to rental accommodation) I opened a UK bank account from Perth (Aus) then I looked at items we did not want/need to ship over and either sold or gave items away, then I "sorted" out the shipping, I had 3 estimates and luckily enough the cheaper estimate was the best as I liked the guys and company (I asked for referrals which they were happy to supply) and when we knew the dates I sourced one way flights and one way insurance we choose B.A....(never again lol) as it was the cheapest and we wanted a stop off in Hong Kong so we used a "local" carrier from Perth to Hong Kong. For "this end" I would get a letter from your Aus car insurance stating your "no claims" it help me here with Aviva and I could have my no claims discount (we lived in Aus for nearly 14 years) if you have your NHS numbers that's great and your N.I numbers that's even better as you can just enrol at a Doctors of your choice if you do not I knew someone who obtained them from Aus but you can always do that when you get home. Not sure if you have somewhere to stay when you arrive back in the U.K but if your not sure and do not have a permanent place then my advice would be to have a good luck around, we did and it helped as we were happy not to have bought in the areas we were thinking of while back in Aus. July is a lovely month to return home its already beautiful light mornings/ evenings and on days like today (and we have widely travelled) for us there is no place prettier than here. Good luck
ps if you have pets then I would make sure they have their vaccinations and book they flights when you know your dates of return.

We are in the High Peak Area of Derbyshire, we have quite a few South Africans living in the area mostly seem to be of English descent. Good luck with everything

hehe. My list of things I miss about Oz is pretty short, but this is close to the top.

To the OP, we've done the international move mullarkey 6 or 7 times now. I always find the toughest bit is tidying up the trailing bills and cut offs, particularly when you leave a dwelling with little time before flying out.

A week in a hotel can be a godsend for sorting crap out before flying. Good luck with figuring out the new car road stuff
