Hi everyone, I dont know if this is posted in the correct message board but im wondering if anyone can give me advice where a good city is in England, currently I live just outside Leicester and im 25 years old, single and need to get out, im born in the UK. I love london but its too expensive for me so that is out off the question, but mabie somewhere near to london but not necessary, I also looked at Leeds but what do you all think? and how do I make a plan bearing in mind I have no contacts and no job so I could do some agency work tempoary?

I love bit cities and drive if that helps, thanks I appreciate it

Birmingham has a lot going for it - very central, close to major airport, multicultural, and they talk with a lurvely accent (or should I say "luv-lay" ...).

Brighton
Oxford
Cambridge

All close(ish) to London, all are aesthetically pleasing, all are UNI towns and have plenty going on.

It mostly depends on your budget.

I lived in Solihull, which is just outside Birmingham, for 11 years before moving here. No money means you can just leave, but might cut down your options a bit.

picking a 'city' is not something thats terribly easy to do.

Remember England is full of different towns each with slight differences even in close proximity:

Winchester - for example, is a beautiful, civilised, expensive middle class town. But move just a few miles south and you can be in the middle of grim Southampton. Head north for 20 minutes and you're in chav-filled Basingstoke.

Oxford as a previous poster pointed out has some beautful spots, BUT its a complete BITCH to try and drive around and actually some areas outside Oxford have some rough corners to them too.

The truth is that ANYWHERE in England will be within a few miles of somewhere nice, and most likely not too far away from somewhere not so nice. So find a job, then chose an area to live in and look around carefully to see if it looks like it has what you need!

(FYI: I've lived and worked in Basingstoke, Keswick, Stoke-on-Trent, Newbury, Andover, Reading, Bracknell, London, Brussels, Brisbane - not necessarily in that order - all have good points and all have bad points...)

What about Bristol? My husband and I moved there from Australia for a year and loved it!
We chose it as there are a lot of young people, lots to do, it's close to Bath, good job oppotunities and has a good night life (not that we're really into clubs) but the younger girls I worked with appreciated it! We found people really friendly and loved the amount of cafes and restaurants there, the shopping is good too.
