Where Mosquitos An Issue??

We got our visas stamped last September and spent three weeks in Perth. There didnt seem to be any mosquitos about when we were there but seeing that there are 'foggers' for sale is a concern and whats an issue for some isnt for others but we are concerned about mosquitos.
Having left the UK for Canada nearly 8 years ago and we have really tried to adjust to the weather here and now I crave being outdoors. I had no idea that the snow stayed on the ground for 6 months plus every year and then from May to September is mosquito season and its really bad, my husband & I have the propane killer, wear all the high deet repellants yet still get bit.
It is almost a feeling of being trapped when you literally head indoors as soon as they come out.
Have any of you had a problem with Mosquitos?
Thanks

Mosquitos and flies love Australia so pretty much wherever you go you will get one or other of them. Mozzies are worse where there is water. Personally, yes, they do restrict my outdoor activities - I cannot stand flies buzzing around my head especially. My son recently bought a mesh suit to protect him against the mozzies as he is out working all day long in the bush - that, and his hat with mesh, he hopes will protect him from bites.

Yup -- we are in Northern New York, just twenty miles from the Canadian border, and I have similar problems with climate/bugs; we have six months of very cold winter, and most of the rest of the year it is hard to enjoy the backyard and the outdoors because of mosquitoes and deer flies. Usually we get decent weather and not too many bugs in April & May.. this year it is torrential, continual rain and quite cold. Oh well..

Not sure from your posting, are you planning a move to Perth in Scotland?

Hi
Perth WA, although Perth, Scotland is looking favourable. Our last bit of snow was just over two weeks ago. Where is Utopia, can you give me a hint! We have lived in several different places over the last 15 years and are still looking for it!

I hope the mesh suit works! Are flies/mozzies a constant problem or are there months when you can step out without fear of being bitten or irritated?

The mozzies in Aus does not come close to the evil swarms of mozzies in Canadian summers. Relax.

Yes, I have a big problem with them, I seem to have a reaction to their bites and get a painful, itchy lump that will last for days. If there is one in the bedroom I can't sleep until it's been killed, I truly despise them with a passion. Here in Brisbane it is a summer problem, it's great at the moment because it's cold for them.

You could move to the west coast of Canada. Mild winters and very few mosquitoes.

I hear you on the winters, but the mosquitoes? We get a couple of waves of them each summer, so just after the snow goes (now) and then in rainy season (June) but then not much at all. It does help that the city sprays everywhere, we found out last summer how effective the spraying is as last summer it was wet and the spray got washed away, there was a big bug problem but most years it's OK, doesn't stop us going out.

BTW I am the favorite person to sit next to when there are mozzies around as they will go for me, even if I'm covered head to foot and leave the near naked person alone.

Just found out that the 'City' might not spray this year - then the mozzies will become an issue:eek::(

Uh Oh I hope they get started soon if they are spraying. Sadly out in the sticks we dont get that luxury.
Today we have had swarms of them when we've gone out to the car - this day so far has to be the worst I've ever experienced here...I hope our skeetervac starts coming into its own and clears an acre just as it says on the label!!
Normally we would have the coils burning on the deck but with these horrendous winds and of course the terrible wildfire tragedies we arent bothering.
Good Luck
PS Who was it that used to say piff poff and something else?? Was it Biggins?
