Oh, but I'm going to Europe. I'll just take Euros then. Here in Switzerland the Euro isn't the local currency (it may be accepted in some places frequented by tourists but with a poor exchange rate). Swiss Francs (CHF) are necessary. Many restaurants and shops don't take American Express/Diners cards either and some places only take cash! OTOH tipping is not necessary  |

Plus I know people too in the UK who are homebodies who have no interest in travel.
Living in t' north I knew of people for whom a shopping trip to Manchester city center was a really big deal. Quite fancy you going to Manchester to do your shopping now are you, t' Market here no good for you then? Not to mention the "meat and two veg" brigade who "won't touch that foreign stuff". |

It seems to be a common misunderstanding in the US.... I know several people who have told me they have been on a Caribbean cruise, and when asked where, they say "to Bermuda". :banghead:

Re: When do you stop being surprised?
For many Americans, going to another state is foreign travel especially if it's beyond their region. So yeah, aren't dollars accepted everywhere?

There's most of Europe at Epcot, and they all take dollars, doesn't it work the same in that other Europe?

Re: When do you stop being surprised?
My British husband and I were at a wedding reception in 2006 when another couple (also guests) began talking. The lady said she thought it would be nice to see England and Ireland and she was trying to get her boyfriend to take her in the future. My husband asked what she was looking forward to seeing and she replied the thousands of castles. He said why do you think there are thousands of castles and she replied that every single person lived in their own castle. The look on my husband's face was priceless and that was my cue to leave and get more punch.
