Funnily enough we also get Tetley tea/white & black pudding/porridge/oatcakes/Tunnocks Teacakes and lots of other Scottish food. Fish and chips are readily available but I would really like good old chippy chips with lashings of vinegar Mmmmmmmmmm

Sorry, Elaine. I was having a bit of a bad day yesterday and posted without thinking. I understand the feeling of wanting things in the familiarity of your own country even if you can get it where you are. Hope you can find what you're looking for.

Actually two weeks from today I'll be on my way to Belfast for Christmas so I'll be enjoying that pint pretty soon.

Yes, thanks, things are looking up today. I usually don't venture into this area of the forum, but I'm on a bit of a dip in my rollercoaster, so thought I would pop my head in. I've decided I'm going to take a trip to Canada next April for my Dad's birthday, so if you're still there then maybe we can get together for a drink.

Well I'd be at 'home' in my house with radiators and double glazing (which is co-incidentally near my friends and family). I'd pull on my 'wellies', warm trousers, thermal clothes, fleece, gloves and waterproof coat....grab the dogs and go for a bloody long walk in the woods....taking in open fields, a tow path and a stream or two. If a Country pub with raging log fire (Irish Coffee in hand) can be included in the equation, then all the better

Hey that's almost exactly what we did one Sunday a few weeks ago - me, OH and 2 kids - drove out to the purbecks - we had a swift half at the Square and Compass and then on down the hill for lunch at the 'Scott Arms' - do you know it? - although it was the end of October it was a beautiful sunny day and it was still warm enough to sit outside - the beer garden at the back is stuck in the Purbeck hills and as you sit there you overlook the village of Corfe and the Castle - so peaceful and just magical.
After that we drove back to Studland and took the footpath out to Old Harry Rocks then a walk down to south beach - kids had a play and then onto the Bankes Arms (beautiful old stone built pub with beer garden overlooking the beach, roaring fire inside) for a coffee!
I'm sorry but anyone who slags the UK off simply has not been going to the right places!

We know all those Arms. Have had lunch in both the Scott Arms and the Bankes Arms. That walk out to Old Harry was a fave one . So peaceful.
I do so miss the area. It's a lovely place innit.
Where we are in New Zealand is lovely , but Hants and Dorset will always have my heart & soul.

Re: What would you do if you were in the UK today?
I went back to the Uk for 6 days 2 weeks ago....I still got up early over there as I now do here and sat there for 3 hours waiting for my hosts to get up switch off the heating that had been on all night and open the curtains at 9am when the Uk finally seems to start! I found it dull, grey and miserable...oh and cold! It was great to catch up with family and friends but did notice that most were sneezing, sniffing or comoletly snotty (children) I must say I am glad to leave that whole miserable life behind me and enjoy my 'new' life...healthy, happy and outdoorsy!
And of course there are no coughs and colds in Oz
And no grey miserable days
I haven't read such crap for a long time - people choose how to live their lives whatever country they reside in. Many people over here are up and about living a happy healthy outdoor lifestyle. Just because your slobby mates choose not to, don't assume that everyone is like that.

It certainly is beautiful - I always feel quite peaceful and relaxed whenever we're over that way (even when the kids are with us!).
NZ has it's beauty too - that's for sure - we spent a month or two backpacking there many years ago (before kids!) - my fave place was Kaikoura on the south island (do you know it) - another beautiful place. It's such a small, peaceful place but one night we wandered up to this tiny pub and it was just rocking - they had a live band playing and the place was just bursting at the seams! I'll never forget it. Whereabouts in NZ are you?
P.S Louise - your post is spot on! tried to give you karma but I've gotta spread it around!
