Re: What sets you off being homesick???
For me it is events like Remembrance Day - I wanted to hear Big Ben and see the UK coverage of it - we dont have Foxtel or anything. I 'need' Big Ben for certain events - seeing the New Year in is one of them. - how sad
Seeing our Union Jack and hearing our National Anthem. It never bothered me in the Uk but now I can hear it or spot our flag a mile away - at the Red Bull Air Race, I stood up with all the POMS for our anthem.
Hearing my Dads voice and wondering what he looks like now, how has he changed - it has been 8 months since I last saw him - he hasnt used his webcam yet.
Seeing photos of my Dad and family and thinking 'I have never seen that dress/shoes/haircut before' and then realising why would I? People buy new clothes and get their hair done and alot can happen/change in 8 months.
Not seeing hardly any UK TV coverage yet when someone bought a selection of UK papers in, I was overwhelmed with how depressing it all was.
Our lives are so different here, I am healthier with my asthma - I barely use an inhaler now when I was on 2 in the UK. I look healthier than I have ever done and feel healthier - after getting glandular fever and getting over it.
I know I can never live in the UK again - but the emotions of people sickness or the triggers that make you wonder where you are and who you are - are very intense.
However, the beauty of where I live astounds me, the quality of our life amazes me but it does come at a very high price.
I suppose I am lucky enough to know where I want to be but as far as homesickness goes, I would say it is when I see British events or hear our Anthem - does it every time.

The thought of not going home for Christmas makes me very homesick (don't think I will be able to this year). I have never put up a Christmas tree here, as I'm always in Scotland, this year it looks like I won't be - in Scotland, or putting up a tree here.................

Never mind. You come on here christmas day and keep me company as i shall be sitting here pretending its not happening. We can be a couple of scrouges together
Although, next year, i am praying i shall have all my brood of grandchildren with me to splash out on.
At the moment i feel homesick just waking up every day

What sets me off more than anything is all the family get togethers, outings, weddings, birthdays etc....they are important and i hate not being there, makes me feel even more lonely here.
I didn't think it would bother me, but it does.

I was going to say opening my eyes in the morning and realising I'm still here, but great minds obviously think alike.
It would have been my Mum's 60th birthday next week and I would have been there now but she passed away earlier this year, that makes me so homesick and resentful.

It doesn't always need anything to set me off, but sometimes things do, for example
- If I watch anything on TV or read anything about people dying of old age, it reminds me I have very elderly grandparents in UK who I should be there with.
- Christmas always does it, knowing that I'm so far from most of my family.
It will be even worse this year because my parents will be on holiday in UK over xmas so I won't even have them here. Also just knowing that xmas celebrations aren't quite the same with the warm weather etc
- whenever I think about my childhood memories of places I enjoy being in UK, which is all the time!

Re: What sets you off being homesick???
Seeing and hearing British people on TV here in Australia and especially the sense of humour. These days the only time I have a good laugh is when I hear something witty and original spoken by a Brit!
Seeing images of the beautiful British countryside on TV and especially the lovely shades of green.
Seeing places in Europe that I love and knowing they are so far away from Oz..
And finally, (and this is a bit shallow) walking round the shops in Australia and feeling disappointed by the choice and quality of what I see compared to UK.

Re: What sets you off being homesick???
Hearing how people are popping off to France for a week or having a cheap week in Majorca.
My Mum telling me what great clothes they have in Next, M&S, H&M etc etc etc when my choice is K Mart or Suzanne Grae.
Watching the UK programmes my family tape and send to me and realising what rubbish they have on here.
Christmas when we have always been on our own here and my family all get together (this Christmas a cottage in Devon).
When I visit the Taste of Britain shop.
Oh well only 8 weeks to go and we're going home for good!
